October is the month for all things scary and for those of us with little ones, a little less scary is better.

As much as I love the spooky, scary costumes of Halloween, there are plenty of times when I just want to dress my kids up in something cute. Like for the first day of school? Or for trick-or-treating through our friendly neighborhood? Or for playing outside with friends and family?

If you’re looking for some inspiration for your child’s costume this year, here are 10 ideas that are more “cute” than “scary.”

I love this clever, simple idea from Craftiness Is Not Optional. Alexa dressed her little one as a fox in sheep’s clothing. All you need is a white tee, a pair of white pants, a set of black ears and then a red marker or fabric paint to draw on the tail and face. Want to go even simpler? Skip the shirt and just use your little one’s favorite white tee.

This intricately detailed Dorothy costume by Detours In Life is absolutely amazing! It would make a perfect Halloween costume, but it could also be great if you happen to live close to Disneyland (or any other amusement park). Check out all the details on how she put this together.

My kids were big fans of Frozen last year [and every year] so I’m loving this Elsa costume

I think I’m getting a bit old for the “Cute” costume thing, but I can’t help it. There’s just something about seeing a little kid dressed up as something that makes you smile.

Here are 10 costumes that fall into the “Cute” category:

The Little Mermaid

Ariel is such a cute character. This costume was made by sewing a dress together with a top sewn in and adding a belt. The seashell bra was made using some foam sheets and the starfish hair clip is just felt and wire.

Wonder Woman

This Wonder Woman costume was made using an old swimsuit and some gold sequin fabric for the jacket. The crown is cut from cardboard and wrapped in gold sequin fabric as well.

Sailor Girl

This costume is so simple to make! Just take any dress, add some red ribbon, blue material and white stars, and you’ve got yourself a sailor girl!

Fairy Princess

This costume is so over-the-top cute! With its ruffled skirt and heart wings, this princess has what it takes to win any cute contest!

Aladdin is a great option for kids who want to dress up as a character from a movie, but don’t want to be too scary. This costume is also a lot of fun because it’s so bright and colorful.

The costume shown above is for kids sizes 4-6, but the same brand makes costumes in other sizes as well. The costume includes the red shirt with gold detailing, the blue harem pants, the gold sash and headpiece, and the white vest. The shoes and sword are not included.

This Aladdin costume is available in the following kid’s sizes:

There are also many adult Aladdin costumes available if Mom and Dad would like to join in on the fun!

I’ve always gotten a kick out of seeing creative costumes at Halloween parties. There’s something about the holiday that makes us feel like kids again and inspires us to be playful and take creative risks.

When my daughter was little, I used to dress her up in a different costume every year — from a fairy princess to Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. (I couldn’t help it; I loved dressing her up!) But as she grew older, she developed a fear of scary costumes, so I had to abandon the idea of dressing her in anything spooky. Now that she’s in high school, she’s left trick-or-treating behind completely and doesn’t want any part of Halloween at all.

And you know what? That’s fine with me! I understand it now — why some teens don’t want to participate in Halloween anymore. They’re ready to move on to new things, and they don’t have time for gimmicks.

But just because my daughter doesn’t want to celebrate Halloween anymore doesn’t mean that all teenagers are the same! There are still plenty of kids who love the holiday and can’t wait for October 31st. And if you’re one of those parents with young kids who enjoys seeing them deck

Aladdin and Jasmine Costume

Aladdin Costume: We love the DIY details in this cute Aladdin costume! The vest is made out of gold vinyl with a blue shirt underneath, and the pants are just some white sweatpants. He even has a toy sword tucked in the back! To complete the look, use makeup to give him a mustache and eyebrows, or you can use brown eyeliner if you don’t want to use makeup.

Jasmine Costume: The Jasmine costume is also very simple to make. Just buy a pair of purple leggings, a blue long-sleeved t-shirt (to be worn as a crop top), and a purple scarf. Add some gold ribbon trim around the waist, and you’re done!
