An amazing Halloween costume that will scare your neighbors!

I got the idea for this costume from a high school friend. I was looking for a costume to wear to class, and he showed me a photo of a plague doctor costume that looked pretty awesome. I made my own version of this costume for about $30, and it only took about 90 minutes to make.

How to make your own Plague Doctor Costume

This is what you need:

black ski mask ($2.00 at Walmart)

black cape (I also got mine at Walmart, but you can use anything black that covers your body and arms)

black pants and black shoes (use whatever you have in your closet)

white gloves (Walmart again – $2.00)

3D printable plague doctor mask (free on Thingiverse)

plastic googles (Tractor Supply – $10.00)

This year I was in desperate need of a Halloween costume, but I didn’t have a lot of money to spend. After searching around the internet, I found this amazing plague doctor mask that looked really awesome and creepy! It was also only 10 bucks, so I had to buy it.

After it came in the mail, I picked up a black cloak from a thrift store and put together this costume:

I am a Halloween junkie, and I have been a plague doctor for the last 2 years. The costume has evolved, and this year I will be wearing the most advanced and detailed one yet. If you are planning on making your own plague doctor costume, then I hope you find this instructable useful.

The history behind the costume is fascinating. Plague Doctors wore these costumes in order to protect themselves from being infected by the disease that they were treating. The actual masks that were worn were made of a leather with glass eye holes, and some type of beak-like structure at the front that was filled with sweet smelling substances (such as lavender).

The original masks also had a cane to help patients breathe easier before they died from an almost certain death. The canes actually acted as breathing tubes through the mask so that doctors could stay away from the infected patient while still being able to talk to them.

The plague doctor costume is an amazing and simple idea. The mask itself is actually a medical device designed to protect people from putrid air. It was used in the 17th century during the time of the Bubonic plague.
