Bonnie & Clyde – The costumes

Bonnie and Clyde are one of the most famous couples in history. Feared by many and idolised by some, there is no denying that their story is interesting to many people. If you want to go as Bonnie & Clyde then you will need two costumes.

Bonnie’s outfit will be easier to get hold of. She was well known for her bobbed hair, so you might want to buy a wig or style your hair accordingly. She wore a lot of lipstick and make-up, so make sure you have these things when it comes to doing your face. For the clothes, she often wore a pair of trousers with tops and sweaters; blouses were also popular at the time, so keep that in mind when choosing what to wear.

Clyde’s outfit will be harder to get your hands on. His signature look was wearing a suit with a bow-tie and a hat; he was also known for having dimples in his cheeks! Try looking for a 1930’s suit with a matching hat, or buy these items separately if it is easier for you. You can put dimples on your cheeks using make-up if you feel like being really authentic!

The costumes worn by Bonnie and Clyde, the famous outlaws of the depression era, were not historically accurate, but they sure were fun! Costume draping was all the rage during this time period, so even if you don’t want to dress up as a gangster or a moll, there are plenty of ways you can use this technique to make a costume from scratch.

The first step is to measure yourself. Measure your bust, waist and hips in inches (don’t try to do this in centimeters – it won’t work). Then use your measurements to choose a size that will fit your body. This chart will help:

6 34 26 36.5

8 36 28 38.5

10 38 30 40.5

12 40 32 42.5

14 42 34 44.5

16 44 36 46.5

18 46 38 48.5

20 48 40 50.5

Bonnie and Clyde were notorious bank robbers and murderers who traveled around the central United States during the Great Depression. Their gang was supposedly responsible for over a dozen murders, at least nine bank robberies, and several other felonies. They are also known for their movie made about them in 1967 which starred Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty as Bonnie and Clyde.

The clothes worn by Bonnie and Clyde in the movie were actually reproductions of what they actually wore and you can duplicate them fairly easily.

Bonnie Parker’s costume was a little more complicated than Clyde Barrow’s. For starters, she always wore her hair in a bob with bangs which you may be able to do yourself otherwise a wig is recommended. The dress she wore in the movie was made up of two parts: a sleeveless white shirt over a long dark blue skirt. If you can’t find anything that matches exactly don’t worry about it – just try to get close.

Her shoes were brown and had high heels – remember this was the 1930 so most women wore heels all the time whether they were dressed up or not. To complete her look wear some blush and bright red lipstick (although this wasn’t really necessary because Faye Dunaway had naturally red lips) and carry around a cigar, preferably in your mouth.

Clyde Barrow’s costume is much simpler than Bonnie’s but doesn’t look quite as good without her

In 1967, the film Bonnie and Clyde starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway hit the big screen, making the two even more famous than they had been before.

Bonnie Parker is famous for her love of poetry as well as her willingness to kill without hesitation. She was a petite woman with bobbed dark brown hair and blue eyes. Her favorite outfit was a pair of men’s overalls with a white blouse underneath, a man’s hat, and oxfords on her feet. She carried guns in holsters around her waist (though she did not use them during robberies) and often smoked cigars to look tougher than she actually was.

Clyde Barrow was tall and lanky with dark hair and dark eyes. He wore thick glasses to correct his poor vision yet he still managed to shoot people with great accuracy during robberies. He preferred wearing suits to cover up the fact that he wore an arsenal underneath them

The costumes used in the film were designed by Theadora Van Runkle. The main characters are Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway) and Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty), who are dressed like ordinary people, except for Bonnie’s orange sweater in one scene.

Myrtle was a waitress at the Top Hat Cafe where Bonnie and Clyde had their last meal. She wore a black wrap-around dress with white flower print. Buck’s (Gene Hackman) shirt is light blue with darker blue stripes and he wears brown pants. Blanche (Estelle Parsons) wears a red dress with black trim. Ted Hinton (Michael J Pollard) wears a brown suit with the collar turned up and his shirt is light blue with white stripes. Velma Davis (Evadne Baker) wears a dark green skirt and yellow sweater with a white blouse underneath it.

To recreate these costumes, you can use new pieces of clothing that have been washed to get them to look like they are vintage. You will need to cut off the tags and labels on new clothes so that your costume looks authentic.
