Princess Jasmine, daughter of the Sultan of Agrabah, is a wonderful example of how Disney has incorporated multicultural ideas into their movies. She is a Middle Eastern woman who was first introduced in Aladdin and then had a much larger role in Aladdin: The Return of Jafar. Her role is expanded even further in the Disney TV show, Aladdin: The Series. These movies showcase her as an intelligent, strong-willed, beautiful young woman with a heart of gold.
The Princess Jasmine costume comes in four different variations from the movie and TV show. The first version is based on what she wore when she first met Aladdin. This costume consists of a purple one-piece dress that has an attached white shirt with billowy sleeves and a purple sash which ties around the waist. Princess Jasmine is a fictional character who appears in Walt Disney Pictures’ 31st animated feature film Aladdin (1992). Jasmine is from the Middle-Eastern kingdom of Agrabah and is one of Disney’s Princesses of Color. The character is based on a princess who appears in the One Thousand and One Nights folk tales.
The earliest known concept of Jasmine was in 1985, when Disney animator Mark Henn was asked to create a new princess for a sequel to Aladdin. He did not draw inspiration from any existing Middle-Eastern cultures, instead using her design to express his own cultural heritage.
Her hair was originally going to be black like that of other ethnic characters such as Mulan and Tiana, but it was later changed due to her being set in Agrabah and its fictional location of Arabia. Her appearance was influenced by the beauty that Henn saw around him every day in Florida, including the exotic flowers and birds. The classic Princess Jasmine costume is a dress. It drapes over the shoulder and has a sheer capelet. The bodice is made of brocade, with gold trimming. The skirt is billowy, and it has a slit in it.
