Jack Skellington is the lead character in the Disney movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. He is also called “the Pumpkin King” as he is tall and thin with a skull-like face, hands, and feet. He wears a black pinstripe suit with a white shirt and black tie. He has a bowler hat that has a gold buckle on it, similar to the one the Mad Hatter wears. Tim Burton’s version of Jack in the Beanstalk is different than others you may have heard of or seen before. His tale starts out with Jack being an ordinary man who gets bored with his life and decides to go on an adventure.
The movie Jack in the box was first introduced to the world in 1993. The plot of the movie is about a young boy named Jack who finds a magic beanstalk that leads him to a land full of giants. He then meets a giant called Biggles who tries to kill him and his friends. After escaping from Biggles, Jack meets another giant named Fleshmonger who tries to eat him alive but fails because he’s too big for Fleshmonger’s mouth!
When Tim Burton was approached by Disney about making an animated version of the story, he wanted it to be different from other versions. So instead of having Jack climb up a beanstalk, he decided on having Jack fall down one! That way it would be more scary for children watching at home because they might think that if they fall down something like that irl then they may never come back up again (or even worse).
The only problem with this plan was how do you make falling down look exciting? Burton came up with an idea: what if instead of just dropping him into nothingness, we see all kinds of crazy things happening around as he falls?

The moral of the original story is about being greedy and trying to take something that doesn’t belong to you. Tim Burton’s version however, seems to be about thinking outside of the box and not settling for less than what you want. It’s about trying new things, even if they seem scary at first because in the end it will work out in your favor.
In this version, Jack doesn’t go after gold or riches, he goes after knowledge and experience. He wants to learn more about life and see what else it has to offer besides Halloween Town.
