I am always searching for ideas for costumes usually on the internet and have found some really good ideas and some that were not so good too. I decided to make an alien costume for a costume contest and will tell you how I came up with the idea for my costume, where I got the materials, what type of things I used to complete my costume and how the contest turned out in the end.
First of all, where did I come up with the idea for my costume? Well, I wanted something that would be easy to make, be unique and stand out from other costumes in the contest. After looking at many ideas online I finally thought of an idea that would be unique, stand out and be pretty easy to make as well.
I had seen some people wearing a spacesuit type costume with a helmet but didn’t seem to have that extra something or was not creative enough so I decided to take it a step further. What if you had a spacesuit with an alien in it? That would definitely be different than anything else in a contest or any party.
The next step was finding out what materials were needed to complete this project. One thing was sure: I did not want to use cardboard because most people use cardboard
I wanted to win the contest, so I decided to be original and make an alien costume. This is how I did it:
1. First you need to get a lot of cardboard boxes, printer paper, duct tape, Velcro, scissors, glue gun and glue sticks.
2. Trace a circle on the cardboard and cut it out with scissors. Make sure it fits your head.
3. Then trace another one but slightly bigger than the first one and cut it out.
4. Now you have the outer shape of the head done.
5. Cut out the eyes on both sides with scissors.
6. Next make some antennae with the cardboard and tape them to both sides of the head piece with duct tape.
7. Now take some printer paper and put glue all over the head piece (the inside one). Use about two sheets for each side of the head piece for thickness purposes only because you want it to be thick enough so your face won’t show through it but not too thick either or it will be hard for you to see through it when you wear it. Let dry for about an hour or less depending on how much glue you use and how big your head piece is because that’s what determines how long it will take
The costumes that I have seen the past few years at my school, and in general, are fairly unoriginal. I had an idea of what I wanted to do this year and that was an Alien. My costume turned out pretty good and I came on top in a costume contest that had a prize of $50. If you are interested in an alien costume as well or “creative” costume ideas, keep reading.
The first thing that you have to do is find a white morph suit (or any color really), spray paint it silver. You can buy the cheapest one at Walmart for under $20 and it will do just fine. While the paint is drying, you can start on the head. This is probably the most important part of the costume because it really makes it look like an alien.
I found all sorts of different ideas online but did not want to spend much money on this so I made something with materials I already had around my house. The head piece is made from papier-mâché paste and newspaper/printer paper strips. It took about 4-5 layers until it was thick enough so that you could not see through it, and then painted it silver like the rest of the suit. You will also need green LED
I just won the costume contest at my office Halloween party. It was a pretty close race, but I’m sure there were no hard feelings among the other contestants. After all, I was dressed as a sexy alien.
As my coworker’s husband said, “You can’t compete with that.”
I got really into my costume this year because of the contest. I made my costume from scratch, and it only cost me about $15 to make. The first thing I did was buy some green mesh fabric for $4 and pink fabric for $1 at a craft store. I cut up the mesh into strips and sewed them onto the pink fabric in several layers so that it looked like scales. Then, I cut two arm holes in the top and covered them with pink fabric on the edges so that it would be comfortable to wear over my arms. Next, I cut up a pair of black leggings and sewed them onto the bottom of the dress so that they would look like black tights on an alien. I sewed the sleeves into tubes using more black material that I had lying around at home and then covered them with furry fabric to give them more dimension. Lastly, I sewed
I was entering a costume contest (to be honest I was the only one who signed up). I knew I had to come up with something original, or the judges would not be impressed. So I decided to create an alien costume. After 3 hours of shopping for materials I had found everything I needed!
I started at a fabric store. I found a pattern that was futuristic and expensive looking. It was also very stretchy, which would be good if it turned out to be too small. Then I went to Jo-Ann’s Fabric and picked out a sparkly, silver material (which ended up being on sale), dark blue fabric paint, light blue rhinestones, safety pins, silver spray paint, white gloves, and fake eyelashes.
After gathering all my materials it was time to get started on my costume. First I cut out the pattern and pinned it together. Then I sewed up the sides of the dress and glued on the rhinestones in different sizes (large ones for decoration and smaller ones for highlights). Next, I painted some dots on the dress as decorations using the fabric paint. When that was dry I marked where my sleeves should go and made two slits in both sides of the dress with scissors. Then I cut two pieces
Last week my friend and I participated in a costume contest at work. Since I’m a software engineer, our team was obviously going to win. We didn’t just walk away with the top prize, but we completely blew everyone away! We were the only techies who entered the contest and we won both first and second place.
We worked really hard to create some really awesome costumes for Halloween using nothing more than cardboard boxes and spray paint…no other tools were used. My friend and I are both huge fans of the movie Avatar so we wanted to recreate the scene of when they first show off the exoskeleton suits.
The Winning Costume – Avatar Exoskeleton
We found a cardboard box that was roughly the right shape for our bodies by laying on it…it was a little too short, but we knew that would be fixed later with blue tape to close up any gaps. After tracing each of our bodies onto cardboard, we cut it out and hot glued it together. Using a box cutter, we cut out arm holes as well as leg holes so that our arms could flap freely like wings as well as be able to run around without tripping over anything (we couldn’t see where we were going if our heads were in the box).
Since both of
I am a creative person who enjoys creating and building props, most of my inspiration comes from video games, anime and movies. The costume that I choose is a Metroid from the game series Metroid by Nintendo.
The materials used to build the costume had to be light weight and easy to wear. The armor is made out of EVA foam and coated with plasti-dip, the helmet was also made with EVA foam and coated with plasti-dip as well.
I have always been passionate about making costumes because it was something that I enjoyed doing as a hobby.
