I have loved Mary Poppins since I was a little girl. I have always been drawn to the timelessness of the story and the magical elements. One of my favorite parts is when Bert whistles for the wind to come and when they dance with the chimney sweeps on the roof.
I grew up performing in musicals and this past year I got the chance to play Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins at our local community theatre. It was such an amazing experience and one I will never forget. One of the most rewarding parts was seeing how excited children were when they saw me as Mary Poppins. They smiled and waved and shouted out “Mary Poppins” as they got their picture taken with me after each show.
I could not have played Mary Poppins without the help from a costume designer from my local community theatre who helped me make my outfit. We started with a pattern for a 1940s style dress that had the look we wanted for Mary Poppins’ dress, but there were some modifications that needed to be made so it looked more like her dress from the movie.
