I am a big fan of your website and blog! I especially enjoy the advice you give to young people, since I’m a high school student. One of my friends recently had a question about making ladybug costumes for her kids. She said that she had seen a few good ones online, but the instructions were very short. She wondered if you might have some tips or tricks that would help her make the costumes more realistic and durable. If you don’t already have any ideas, do you have any suggestions as to where she might find more information?

Thanks so much! We really appreciate your time and effort.

My first instinct was to say that we could start by trying to find some ladybugs in our area, then just make a costume based on what they looked like. But then I realized that we probably wouldn’t need ladybugs if we wanted to make our costumes look like them; we could just use pictures of them instead. So I started searching for pictures of ladybugs on the Internet, and eventually found some good ones: one from an educational website called “The Ladybug” [1], and another from an online gallery called “Bug Pictures” [2]. Both of these websites have plenty of other images as well, but

This is a guide on how to make your own ladybug costume. The costume consists of a red and black body, wings, antennae, and legs.

Materials:

Red stretchy fabric: Polyester or spandex knit works best. I used polyester knit since that’s what I had on hand. This should cost about $5 per yard if you buy polyester knit from JoAnn Fabrics or similar store. You will need about 2 yards of this for the body and wings (more on this later).

Black stretchy fabric: Same as above, except in black. You will need about 1/4 yard of it for the body, half a yard for the legs, and a small amount for the eyes and mouth.

Foam pipe insulation (or something like it): This provides the antennae and some of the legs. It’s very cheap and available at all hardware stores. You will need about 2 feet of foam pipe insulation tube (about $1 worth).

Stuffing: To make the antennae, legs, and wings 3D you’ll need some stuffing material, such as batting or pillow stuffing. You will need at least 1 pound of this, which should cost around $3 at most fabric stores.

Introduction

I’m happy to share with you how I made my own ladybug costume. I was looking for a cute, but simple costume to wear to a Halloween party. I had my heart set on dressing up as a ladybug, but I couldn’t find any pre-made costumes that were cheap or in my size (I am a little on the tall side). I decided that making one myself wouldn’t be too difficult so I gave it a shot. It turned out very well, and many of the people at the party complimented me on my look.

I will share with you some of the materials, tools and techniques that I used to make my costume. Hopefully it will be helpful, and even fun for you.

Making a ladybug costume is easy if you have a red dress and black polka dots. All you really need is fabric paint, some cardboard, hot glue, and a little time.

You can make your own ladybug wings using craft foam and elastic. If you’d rather not paint your dress, you can use craft foam instead.

Just cut out the pieces of foam in the shape of the wings, glue them together, and sew them to a red onesie or shirt that fits your child snugly. Add some antennae made from pipe cleaners to complete the outfit!

The best part about these costumes? They’re inexpensive!
