How to Paint Your Own Costume

Paint is an important part of your costume. If you have an elaborate costume that you have made yourself, what better way to complete it than with the perfect paint.

You can buy special costume paints from a variety of places, but if you are looking for a more personal touch you can try painting it yourself. You just need to be sure that you use the right materials.

If you are planning on wearing the costume for a long period of time, or in hot conditions, then avoid acrylics as they will make you sweat, and tend to crack over time. In this case a good option would be fabric-based paints, as these will not only look good but last a long time too.

Paint your own costume is pretty easy, you can use regular fabric paint and some acrylic paint for details. You can also use spray paint but it may harm the material. The first step to painting your costume is to sketch out what you want on a piece of paper. Then you can either freehand it or put on the costume and trace it on.

The following is a photo essay of my process for painting the superman costume I wore to the San Diego Comic Con. As I did not have any previous experience with fabric painting, it was quite the learning experience for me. I hope this helps anybody else that wants to try their hand at something similar.

Each step in my process is detailed below, though you can also just download the PDF version of my instructions and follow along that way.

I have been meaning to paint my own superman costume for quite some time now. I figured it was about time that I expand my horizons and try out a new project.

I’ve painted several costumes over the years and each one seems to get better and better with each project. This one is no exception. I ended up using a different technique from what I’ve used in the past and it seems to have given me better results.

It all started with a trip to the fabric store. I had never painted anything with an actual brush before so this was going to be an interesting experiment.

The first thing that I did was go online and look up how other people have painted their costumes. What I found was there are actually several different methods that you can use, but the most popular method is using spray paint or airbrush paint.

I decided that spray paint would be the best option since it would give me a more even coat of color, which would make it easier to apply the paint later on.

Once I had decided on my paint type, I went ahead and purchased some spray cans at my local hardware store. After purchasing them, I took them home and started applying them directly onto my costume.

Painting is a great way to make your costume stand out.

Buy a base costume. For example, if you are painting Batman, buy a black and grey Batman costume. This allows you to add your own paint to the costume without worrying about making the original colors disappear or bleeding through.

Paint your costume. You can use either fabric paint or acrylic paint. Acrylic paint will last longer and may be more durable, but fabric paint is better for delicate fabrics like silk or other thin materials. You can also use spray paint, which is great for larger pieces that are hard to reach with a brush (like the chest of a Superman suit). Be aware that spray paint leaves a strong smell and may be flammable. If you use spray paint, make sure to do it in an open area like outside.

Decide what you want to add when painting your costume. You can make your own design for this part or look up how others have done it online (see Resources below). Make sure to take into consideration the original colors of the costume you bought so that you don’t need as many coats of paint on top of each other and so that it looks like it actually belongs on the suit.
