Most businesses would be thrilled if their customers grew at a steady 7 percent a year. That’s what the market for new tires does. But then along came Walmart, with its rolling discounts on name-brand tires. All of a sudden people who wouldn’t have bothered to shop around for tires were bringing their cars in for $10 off a tire.

“When we came out with our program, it was like pouring gasoline on a fire,” says Mr. Jackson, who is also chairman of the Tire Industry Association. “It really set off this price war.”

Now the industry has to figure out how to put that fire out. The problem is that tires are one of those products where customers are highly likely to comparison shop — and retailers can’t afford to lose the price war. So they’ve got to take whatever steps they can to make sure they’re not the ones cutting prices while everyone else stays at full price.

The tire industry’s solution was something called “Tire Recall IQ,” which just went online last month. It allows retailers to see which other retailers near them have lowered their prices on certain brands and models of tire, so that they can match those prices as soon as possible.
