Pirates! Gotta love em, right? A blog around the history of pirates as well as strategies to fight them.

Pirates! Gotta love em, right? These are people who proudly fly the black flag, raid other ships and take over ports. They are rebels against authority. They have their own law and live outside the bounds of society.

They don’t have a culture of dress uniforms or spit and polish. They dress in whatever rags they find and wear them until they fall off their backs. They are often covered with tattoos that express their values or interests from the skull and crossbones to anchors to gambling to the Jolly Roger.

In this first article we’ll talk about some history of pirates and then in future articles we’ll discuss strategies for defeating them.

Pirates are the best. And while they may not be the most popular topic on the Internet, there is a surprising amount of information available regarding our favorite sea-faring ruffians.

This blog will provide a regular deep dive into the history of pirates and their golden age. We’ll also take a look at some strategies for fighting them in case you find yourself caught in a pirate attack.

Fearsome pirates, sailing the open seas in search of plunder. Ranging from the Caribbean Sea to the Indian Ocean, these pirates have been a constant threat to international commerce.

Piracy has existed for as long as there was something to steal on the sea. In recent years (2000-2010), Somali pirates have been especially active, capturing dozens of ships and holding hostages for ransom.

In this blog, I will write about pirate history and strategies for defense against them.

The golden age of pirates lasted from about 1650 to 1730. It was a time when the world was changing and people were moving from the country to cities and ports. The New World had been discovered, and treasure ships were sailing back to Europe loaded with gold, silver, spices, and other luxuries. Pirates became feared because they captured these ships and stole their riches.

Pirates took over ships by surprise attacks. They usually carried fewer men than merchant ships had, but they were armed with cannons. When they caught up with a ship they wanted to attack, they flew the Jolly Roger (the pirate flag) and fired cannonballs at their target. If the captain surrendered, pirates would take only the valuables from the cargo hold or passengers’ baggage—not from their quarters—and let them go on their way. Sometimes pirates forced captured sailors to join their crew or even forced women to be their wives for a short period of time (often called “wifeing”).

I can only imagine what pirate costumes looked like in the 17th century. As much as I like to dress up as a pirate, it’s probably best that we have a few centuries between us and the real thing. But there is one costume aspect that I think is timeless: the eyepatch.

I’ve always wondered why pirates wore eyepatches. Most of my speculation was based on Hollywood’s portrayal of pirates, which is not entirely accurate. However, if you think about it, they must have had a reason to wear them.

So I did some research…

Turns out there are two main reasons for the use of an eyepatch by sea-going folk. First, many pirates suffered from eye-related injuries due to scurvy or battle wounds, so the eyepatch was used for medical purposes. Second, many pirates wore an eye covering in order to adjust to the dark lighting below deck in case they were needed on deck quickly.

Of course, there are certain modern day benefits to wearing an eyepatch (the most obvious being that you look cool). For example: if you have an eye infection and need to keep your eye covered or protected from light; if you’re trying to hide an eye injury; or if

Pirate costumes are a great way to show your love of the history. Pirates have long been an iconic symbol of adventure, rebellion, and freedom. The pirate costume has withstood the test of time and is still popular today. There are many different styles and variations of the pirate costume, including everything from traditional looks to modernized versions. A pirate costume makes a great Halloween costume or a fun dress-up option for kids any time of year.

Pirates have been around for at least four thousand years but have been romanticized in the last few hundred years. Their popularity surged in the 1990s with the release of blockbuster movies like “Pirates of the Caribbean.” They became even more popular when Johnny Depp played a role as a pirate in these movies. Pirate costumes make great Halloween costumes because they are easy to put together and can be assembled from items you might already own.

The main components of a pirate costume include:

pants

a button-down shirt

an oversized belt

a bandanna (or eye patch)

boots or other footwear
