It’s a place where dreams of becoming a vampire, a witch, or a superhero are realized. The shop, known as “The Costume Shop,” is a haven for actors, filmmakers, and anyone who wants to step into a different persona. It’s a place where imagination runs wild, and the boundaries of reality are blurred. The shop’s owner, Ursula Boschet, is a woman of boundless energy and a passion for all things theatrical.
She started her business in 1973, and for the past 48 years, she has been creating custom-made garments and costumes for individuals and organizations. Boschet’s work has been featured in numerous publications, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and The New York Times. Her creations have been worn by celebrities like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Jennifer Lopez.
The store is a testament to her legacy, a place where she poured her heart and soul into creating unique and beautiful pieces. There are still hundreds of handmade costumes in the back of the store, many designed and sewn by Boschet herself. Text: The store, a haven for the discerning fashion enthusiast, is a testament to the legacy of its founder, Boschet. It’s a place where passion and artistry intertwine, where each garment tells a story of dedication and creativity.
These are not just decorations, they are part of the restaurant’s unique atmosphere. These animals are meticulously crafted from clay, each one unique and hand-crafted, and they add a whimsical touch to the ambiance. The restaurant’s menu is an eclectic mix of cuisine from around the world. The dishes, carefully selected and presented, reflect the restaurant’s global appeal.
It’s filled with photos of their past, showcasing their shared passions and interests. The photos capture moments of joy, laughter, and shared experiences, reminding her of the vibrant life they once lived together.
Despite vicious competition from online sellers, some customers still prefer the bespoke experience of creating custom costumes with Boschet. Actor Jamie Lee Curtis — who, fittingly, starred in the 1978 horror movie Halloween — has been patronizing Ursula’s Costumes for decades. “We were devotees of Ursula’s in my house,” she told NPR. “We were starting to think about Halloween in February, like we were already starting to discuss ideas.” Curtis’ daughter Ruby is a cosplayer, so Ursula’s Costumes was a frequent stop for her. Ruby’s recent wedding was cosplay-themed, and Curtis says many guests purchased their costumes from Boschet’s shop. “[Ursula] loves a collaboration,” says Curtis. “When I would go in and present the picture of what it was we were trying to create, you could see her light up.”
The shop, located in the heart of the city, was a beloved local institution, known for its vast selection of costumes and its friendly, welcoming atmosphere. It was a place where people could find everything they needed for any occasion, from everyday wear to elaborate theatrical productions. Ursula’s Costumes was a family-owned business, and its legacy was deeply intertwined with the community.
