But there are few heroes who’ve stood the test of time like Iron Man. He’s been around since 1963, and he’s stayed as popular as ever through several movies and TV shows. So what’s his secret?

Iron Man Costume History
Tony Stark’s Iron Man armor has evolved over the years, through many iterations and incarnations, both in the comics and on the big screen.
The first Iron Man suit was a clunky gray thing that looked like an old-fashioned deep-sea diving suit.
Tony Stark: So it’s a costume?
Pepper Potts: If you call it a costume, it makes it sound frivolous. You make tools for a living. This helps you do your job.
Tony Stark: I think we need to work on your people skills.
Pepper Potts: I think we need to work on your humility.

In this blog, I’ll be discussing the development of the Iron Man suit throughout the comics, TV shows, and movies. The second movie will be coming out in a month and with it comes more developments in his suit.
In the comic books, Tony Stark underwent several transformations to his suit that are not seen in the movies. In one version, he created a suit made of armor plates over chain mail. While this looked really cool and was reminiscent of real knights and samurai, it was obviously impractical for Iron Man’s purposes. It would have been too heavy and restricted Tony’s movement too much to allow him to fight effectively.
The first movie did a great job of keeping the spirit of the armor from the comics while making it more grounded in reality. I think that this is because they understood that people looking at the movies may not have read any of the comics and would be able to see through some of Iron Man’s most ridiculous looks (looking at you Hulkbuster) as long as they could keep the tone of his design consistent with what he looked like in the 60’s.
I’m hoping that they will keep this same philosophy for future movies so that we can continue seeing new designs for his suit while still keeping it grounded in reality. I’m also hoping
Tony Stark has always used his Iron Man suit to protect the world. His armor has evolved over the years and has gone through a lot of different changes. Here’s a look at some of our favorite versions.
Mark I Suit: This prototype was built in a cave with some scraps and a box of scraps. While not very advanced, it was enough to get Tony out of captivity and into the world to fight evil.
Mark II Suit: This version was more advanced than the first, but still needed some work. Tony had made improvements that would allow him to fly longer distances and battle evil more effectively.
Mark III Suit: This was the first version of the suit that looked like the classic red and gold we all know and love. It also introduced us to JARVIS, who remains by Tony’s side today as his most trusted confidant.
Model 4: This is probably one of our favorite models because it looks so much like the classic red and gold. Tony also starts using repulsor technology with this model, which makes him an even more formidable opponent against evil forces everywhere.
Model 7: There are only two words to describe this suit – Obadiah Stane! He stole this model from Tony while he was recovering from injuries
In the original comic books, Iron Man’s suit is made of steel. But in the movies, it’s made of gold. Why?
The first Iron Man movie established that the gold-and-red suit was one of a collection of suits designed for different purposes.
In Iron Man 2, Tony Stark reveals that the golden suit is his “atomic” suit, designed to withstand extreme forces:
Throughout his career, Tony has created 42 different versions of the suit, with each one being better than the last. The Mark VII (Mark 7) is the latest version of the Iron Man armor. It was created after Stark returned from New York City during the events of The Avengers. This version was used by Tony to defeat Aldrich Killian and saved Pepper Potts’ life after she became infected with Extremis.
