The Hogwarts Guide to Halloween Costumes

Hogwarts-Themed Halloween Costumes

Halloween is fast approaching, and if your family is anything like mine, you are still debating what to be for Halloween. Why not take advantage of the release of the new Harry Potter movie and go as one of your favorite characters from Hogwarts?

If you are looking for a simple costume that requires little-to-no craftsmanship, then this is the option for you. Simply don the famous black robe with your favorite house pin, and you’re all set! You can also add a wand and a magic book.

If you’re looking to do something more original, there are some other options out there. Why not try being a Death Eater or Bellatrix Lestrange? All you’ll need is black robes and a mask.

Or maybe you want to be Luna Lovegood? She’s easy enough to copy–just get round glasses, wear your hair down and add an animal cracker necklace.

The possibilities are endless! Have fun brainstorming the perfect costume for this spooky season!

Halloween is a time to embrace your inner witch or wizard and don a robe, snitch, or sorting hat. This year’s costumes range from the classic ghouls and goblins to Harry Potter-inspired ensembles.

Whether you’re going to a party or handing out candy, here are some of our favorite costumes for fans of J.K. Rowling’s magical world.

Halloween is a time for fun, but the costumes can be expensive. Here are some cost-effective options for fans of Harry Potter.

Harry

Harry’s costume is a simple one to put together. The most important part is his glasses, which can be found at any eyewear store. Other essentials include jeans, a t-shirt, and sneakers. A black robe and a stick from the backyard work well as accessories.

Ron

Ron’s costume is also easy and cheap to create. First find an old sweater and some jeans or khakis. Next look for a pair of round spectacles (eyeglass stores will have these). Finally, get a red or ginger wig from the costume shop; wands are optional.

Hermione

Hermione, like Ron and Harry, does not have to be over the top to make an impression on Halloween. An old sweater and skirt will do just fine for her outfit, but make sure that you find large round glasses and that your hair is very bushy. Wands can be found at toy stores so they should not be too expensive either!

I have a confession to make. I always have a hard time coming up with Halloween costumes for my kids. The idea of making something from scratch is daunting, and I’d prefer to avoid the craziness of the costume aisle at Target. Luckily, I think we’ve found some doable last-minute costumes that are perfect for fans of Harry Potter!

If you have a yellow t-shirt and black pants, you can dress your child in yellow as an egg! (Complete with spots.) If you don’t have yellow pants, it would be fun to paint some on there with fabric paint.

Then, all you need is a mask to represent the character of your choice. You can probably make one out of paper mache or cardboard (though I’ll leave that up to you), or there are lots of masks available online. Here are just a few:

Harry Potter Mask – $13

Hermione Mask – $9

Ron Weasley Mask – $16

Dobby Mask – $15

Snape Mask – $16

Hagrid Mask – $24

Dumbledore Mask – $15

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! No, not Christmas — Halloween. And what better way to celebrate the creepiest holiday than with a spooky Harry Potter costume?

Whether you’re dressing up for your school’s Halloween party or a night out on the town, here are some costume ideas that will surely cast a spell on anyone who sees them.

1. Luna Lovegood

Hermione might be the brainy bookworm and Ginny might be the bold jock, but Luna is both smart and strong. Plus, she has rad earrings and a pet lion. You can’t get much cooler than that.

For her look, it’s all about accessorizing. Get a plain white dress (or blue if you want to go more authentic) and add some flair with handmade accessories like a headband, hair tie, or necklace. You can even make your own radish earrings!

2. Bellatrix Lestrange

She’s creepy, she’s kooky, she’s altogether ooky. Bellatrix Lestrange is one of the scariest characters in all of Harry Potter, so if you want to go as her for Halloween, you’ve got to commit to playing the part!

Who wouldn’t want to be a character from the Harry Potter series? A witch, wizard, or even a magical creature! Harry Potter fans are lucky in that they have so many choices.

Choose your favorite character and get ready for a magical time.

Let’s start with the basics. You’ll need:

– A wand (or broomstick if you’re going as a quidditch player)

– Glasses (if you are going as Harry, Hermione, Luna or Neville)

– Tie (if you are going as a Hogwarts student)

– A cape or robe (if you’re going as an older student/teacher)

– A hat (if you’re going as Professor McGonagall or Lockhart)

Wands can be purchased at many toy stores and craft stores. They can also be made at home by parents using craft supplies. Broomsticks can be made from cardboard and sticks. For the other items, it might be helpful to go to thrift stores to find a tie, cape or robe. The glasses can easily be made from cardboard frames and yellow construction paper lenses.

Now that we have the basics covered, let’s look at some specific characters:
