Moana has been a hot topic for the last few months and we couldn’t be happier! The upcoming children’s film and moana costume have been a huge hit thus far. Moana is the latest addition to Disney’s line up of animated films. This film will follow in the same footsteps as Frozen, Tangled, and Brave as another strong female lead for little girls to look up to.
Moana is a Polynesian princess who has been chosen by the ocean to find Maui, a rogue demigod. It was Maui who stole the heart of Te Fiti and created the island chain throughout Polynesia; however when he was attacked by a lava monster called Te Ka, he lost his magical fish hook. Without the hook, he can no longer control his powers over nature and create islands. Moana will venture out on her own to find Maui and return the heart of Ti Fiti bringing peace back to her people.
Moana will be voiced by newcomer Auli’i Cravalho and Maui will be voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The film is set for release on November 23rd just in time for Thanksgiving weekend holiday!
Moana is a new Disney Princess! She is not only the first Princess from Polynesia, but also the newest Disney character from the upcoming film Moana Costume. So what is Moana like?
Moana, according to her official biography, is a strong-willed girl who has been chosen by the ocean to go on an adventure (sound familiar?). She loves her island and her people more than anything, but she has always been drawn to the sea. Little does she know that saving her people will require going far out of her comfort zone and right into the middle of a storm. Luckily for her, she meets Maui (voiced by The Rock) along the way, who helps guide Moana on her journey.
The last time we saw a new Disney princess was in 2013 with Rapunzel Costume from Tangled. It’s been three years since then and it seems like it’s been forever! We’re so excited to see this new princess be introduced and we can’t wait for her movie to come out!
Moana is the newest Disney Princess who will be released in November of 2016. She is the daughter of the Chief of a Polynesian tribe who must complete a quest to save her people. We are very excited about this movie and so we have decided to dedicate this blog post to her.
Moana is voiced by Auli’i Cravalho who was discovered through Oahu, Hawaii’s “Ohana Means Family” program which recruits local talents to audition for Disney. Auli’i had no prior acting experience, but she auditioned and was chosen amongst thousands of hopefuls, including her best friend. Her first acting role has made her an overnight sensation. She has been featured in multiple news outlets and magazines because of it.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is also featured in the movie as Maui, an ancient demigod who helps Moana complete her quest. Dwayne Johnson is half-Samoan so it’s fun to see him get back to his roots with this film. He also has some great music that you can listen to on YouTube in anticipation for the movie’s release!

To be honest, I had never heard of Moana before the movie was announced. I am not ashamed to admit that I have never seen a Disney Princess film, let alone know their names. My 6 year old daughter has only seen a few minutes of one or two Disney films and she doesn’t watch TV at all. When I told my husband the name of the new princess, he didn’t even know who she was.
So why are we so excited about Moana? It’s simple really – it’s because she’s Polynesian. The fact that there is finally a Polynesian princess is mind blowing! And what is even more amazing is that she is strong and independent!
My daughter is Tongan, Samoan and Maori (and a little bit of European). We live in New Zealand and many of us are Polynesian – our country has the highest percentage of Polynesians outside of the Pacific Islands – so her connection to Moana is strong. She can identify with her; she sees someone who looks like her on the big screen.

The main character, Moana Waialiki, is thought to be the daughter of a village chief on the island of Motunui. When her people’s food supply begins to dwindle, she sets sail in search of a fabled island with a demigod named Maui.
