At first glance, it’s a simple dress that any girl would love to wear. But, this was a costume that required the right textures, fabrics and construction to make it believable on screen. The costume designers for “Beauty and the Beast” created an outfit that was fit for an animated princess.
The “Belle” costume from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is one of the most recognizable movie costumes in history. But, how did it come to be? How was it made? What was involved in its construction?
The first step was choosing a designer; they landed on Belle Couture by Christine Clark.
Christine Clark has been making custom costumes for over 25 years. She is best known for her innovative designs and intricate beadwork. Most recently she worked on “X-Men: Days of Future Past” as well as “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, “Godzilla” and many more.

In this tutorial, we’ll make a Belle costume. You can also use the steps to make almost any princess costume.
This is a simple costume that is easy to make and fun to wear. The hardest part will be getting all of the details right for your particular princess.
In our design, we are using yellow fabric for the bodice and skirt. The underskirts are made from a sheer material, and the sleeves are made from lace. We have a white petticoat with lace trim to wear under the yellow skirt. Lace gloves add a nice touch, as well as a jeweled necklace and tiara.
For makeup, you will need some light foundation or face paint in your skin tone, as well as light pink blush for the cheeks and blush brush or sponge applicator. For eyeshadow, you want a light pink shade across your lid and brow bone, with darker pink in the crease. You will also need black eyeliner and mascara. For lipstick, you want something in a rosy pink shade that matches your eye shadow.
