The plague doctor’s outfit was first used in 17th century Europe during outbreaks of Black Death (aka bubonic plague). The costume was designed by Charles de L’Orme who worked as a physician at Hotel Dieu hospital in Paris from 1656 until his death in 1670. His design featured an ankle-length overcoat, a wide-brimmed hat with two large eye holes cut out on either side and attached to the brim by wire so they could be moved around to provide better vision while walking through crowded streets or examining patients who were sick with smallpox; he also wore thick leather

The plague doctor costume was the clothing worn by a plague doctor to protect him from airborne diseases. He would also usually carry a cane and a mask with glass openings that allowed him to see without being contaminated.
This particular hat is known as “beak doctor” due to its beak-like shape. It was worn by doctors who treated those who had the Bubonic Plague. The costume consists of an ankle length overcoat and a bird-like beak mask, often filled with sweet or strong-smelling substances (commonly lavender), along with gloves, boots, a wide-brimmed hat, and an outer over-clothing garment.
