50 Years of Spider-Man Costumes

50 Years of Spider-Man Costumes

August 9, 2012 by Robyn Jordan

Spider-Man is one of the most popular superheroes, and for good reason. He was a “nerdy” teen who got bitten by a radioactive spider and gained superpowers. Peter Parker gained enhanced strength and agility, the ability to stick to almost any surface, and a sixth sense that alerted him to danger. The costume he created with his new powers not only helped him to protect the people of New York City, but it also remains one of the most recognizable superhero costumes today. There have been several variations on his suit over the years, but some are definitely better than others.

The Original Suit

The first suit that Peter Parker created was made out of material he found around his home. It included long underwear (as seen in Captain America: The First Avenger) and a blue hoodie that had been dyed red using Rit dye. He used webbing from his father’s old World War II uniform to create the fabric that would hold all of it together. The pants were held up with suspenders, as there was no belt loop for them. The webbing design was red with blue splotches; later on in his crime fighting career, Peter would change this design

Spider-Man has had a lot of costumes over the last 50 years. While most of them have been variations on the original, there are some that stand out from the crowd. Here are a few of my favorites (I’ve included links to images as well):

The Black Symbiote Suit

Spider-Man first got this suit in Secret Wars

Spider-Man has one of the most iconic costumes in comic book history and the character has been around for 50 years. Over that time, the costume has gone through a number of changes, from it’s fairly simple beginnings to today’s “superhero-high-tech” suit that has made an appearance in both of the recent Spider-Man movies.

The original costume was a mostly red affair with a spider chest design and webbing across the sleeves, legs and torso. The mask was blue with black webbing and small white eyes. Since then, there have been numerous redesigns and the character has gone on to appear in many various comic books, cartoons, video games and movies.

Spider-Man is one of the most popular superheroes in history and his costume is instantly recognizable by generations of fans who have grown up reading his comics or watching him on screen.
