DIY Maleficent Costume

I’ve been working on a DIY Maleficent Costume for Halloween. It is based off of the new Angelina Jolie movie by Disney. It’s almost done and I will be sharing the whole project in a series of posts right up until Halloween.

I’ve been making this costume for quite some time now, and I’m so close to being done! But there are still many finishing touches to make before it will be really finished. I’ll share the end result soon, but in the meantime here are some photos of my progress so far:

The first step was to find a pattern for the corset. I found one that looked like it would work, but ended up having to modify it quite a bit to get it to look right. The next step was to find the right fabric for the corset. I settled on a dark blue velvet with gold stitching around all the edges. Then I sewed all the pieces together using a sewing machine and hand-sewing for some parts of it because they were too small or complicated for sewing machine.

After that came painting all over them with acrylic paint in black, browns and golds — also using both brushes by hand as well as airbrushing which gave me better coverage (especially on large areas

I LOVE HALLOWEEN. This year I wanted to be something really cool and different, but I wasn’t sure what to go as. One night while watching TV, Sleeping Beauty came on. When Maleficent appeared on the screen, it clicked! She is a badass villain and would make a great costume!

I searched high and low for a Maleficent costume, but it was no where to be found! So I decided to make my own. It took me two weeks of trial and error, but I finally made one that I am happy with. Below is a step by step tutorial on how I did it.

The headpiece was the most difficult part to figure out. The first thing was to find the right shape for the horns. I chose this clip-on hair extension by Nattress for the base of them. These are quite cheap and easy to get hold of online or from hairdressing suppliers in your area.

The extensions were not big enough to have an imposing look, so I had to bulk them out by adding foam pieces around them. The foam pieces are covered in duct tape, making it more durable and easier to paint later on. The foam pieces were easy enough to cut into shape with a craft knife but

I love Disney villains. One of my favorite Disney films is Sleeping Beauty, and Maleficent is the best villain ever. I wanted to be her when I was a little girl, but I didn’t know how to make it work. Costumes can be so expensive, and Maleficent’s costume is really elaborate. But my friend helped me figure it out. We used a black dress, black gloves, and a lot of wire hangers. It was fun, and we got some great pictures out of it.

I saw Maleficent a couple weeks ago and fell in love with the character. She is so bad ass and I love it. I immediately started thinking of how to make her costume. I think the finished result looks pretty cool.

I used a Simplicity pattern that I ended up modifying quite a bit to get it to look right.

The cape was made with a faux suede fabric, which is actually pretty cheap at Joanns right now. The bodice was made with some craft foam and then black stretch velvet over it.

The horns were made out of model magic, which is great because you can just roll out balls of it and press them together to make your shape. This is my first time ever working with model magic or making horns so they aren’t perfect, but I’m pretty happy with how they turned out!

I really love halloween, and get a little crazy about our costumes every year. My kids have had some pretty decent costumes over the years. I wanted to share one of my favorites, Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty. I made this costume for my daughter when she was 18 months old (she is now 7).

Here are some pictures of the finished product:

Look at her little face! She just loved Maleficent so much!

This is probably one of the more elaborate costumes that I’ve made, but it wasn’t too terribly hard. Here is what you will need:

A large plastic bowl, like the kind you get in a restaurant A roll of black garbage bags Black spray paint (not pictured) A large piece of cardboard Black felt Black tulle Gold sequins Gold fabric paint The headpiece pattern (link below) X-Acto knife Scissors Glue gun Wire coat hanger White or ivory bodysuit A pair of black leggings (not pictured) Black socks with holes cut in the top to slip over your child’s legs (not pictured) Hot glue gun Scissors Pattern for the headpiece: maleficent_headpiece_pattern.pdf

I was never into the Disney movies growing up. I have three older brothers so we watched everything but Disney – and I’m glad we did! However, there is one movie that I did like – the Fox and the Hound. The Fox and the Hound is a Disney movie about two unlikely friends, a red fox named Tod and a hound dog named Copper. They play together as pups, but as they grow up, their friendship is tested as they become enemies by nature. It’s a very sad movie.

I do like some of the recent Disney movies such as Tangled and Frozen. Recently Angelina Jolie played Maleficent in her own live-action film called Maleficent. She played an evil fairy godmother who cast a spell on princess Aurora – cursing her to fall into a deep sleep on her sixteenth birthday after pricking her finger on a spinning wheel spindle. So for Halloween this year I decided to be Maleficent!

I found this costume online for $100!! It’s way too expensive for me so I decided to make it myself 🙂

I also wanted to make it look like the one that Angelina Jolie wore in the movie (pictured below).

We all have a basic understanding of who Maleficent is from the Disney animated movie Sleeping Beauty. But it’s not until you watch the live action version that you actually get to learn about who she was. When she was young, Maleficent would fly around her forest kingdom as a free spirit and bring joy to everyone she encountered. That is until one day when she was betrayed.

I’ve been told I have a face for radio and a voice for print, so I’m going to let Angelina Jolie tell you about what happened next:

Maleficent transforms herself into a giant dragon and confronts Prince Phillip, who stabs her with his sword. The curse is fulfilled as Aurora pricks her finger and falls into a death-like sleep. A grief-stricken Maleficent rushes to her side, and uses her magic powers to keep Aurora safe from harm and hidden in the forest.

In time, three good fairies arrive to reverse the spell, but only with “true love’s kiss.” Prince Phillip awakens Aurora with his kiss, saving both kingdoms. Maleficent watches nearby as the two lovers meet again and embrace. Realizing now that true love does exist in this world, she takes back her
