Disney’s Mulan is based on an ancient Chinese folk tale, which was turned into a ballad called The Ballad of Mulan. The story goes that there was a Chinese girl who took her aged father’s place in the army and she fought for 12 years and gained high military honor before she retired to her hometown. This story is supposed to have taken place around 386-534 A.D.

Mulan is a movie about a girl who takes her father’s place fighting an invading army and becomes one of China’s greatest heroes. The Disney version is creative and fun, but the original story has much more to offer.

The original story is from the 5th century CE, during the Wei dynasty. It was originally told orally and only written down later. It is called “The Ballad of Mulan” or “The Song of Mulan.”

Mulan was never really a princess. Her father is never referred to as the Emperor and in fact he doesn’t even have a name! The closest thing she has to royalty is her grandmother Fa Li, who appears in the sequel Mulan II. In the sequel, Fa Li is referred to as being a member of the royal family and it is revealed that she was originally arranged to marry a royal when she was younger, but she fell in love with Fa Zhou (Mulan’s father) and they eloped together.

It is revealed in the sequel that Mulan has an older sister named Xiu who had been arranged to marry someone from another family in order for them to be able to keep their land. However, Xiu ended up falling in love with someone else, which led to her going against her parent’s wishes and marrying the man she loved. She ends up leaving home and joining a convent after refusing to marry someone she does not love.

In the sequel, Mulan is said to be engaged with Shang (from the first movie), but she ends up running away from home so that Xiu can take her place and marry his friend Sir Li Shang (not from the first movie).
