You can make a Captain America costume without breaking the bank. If you have an old red, white, and blue outfit lying around, you can use it as the basis for a costume that looks like a superhero.
I recently made a Captain America costume by hacking together a number of pieces of my son’s old Marvel Comics uniform (a blue shirt and green pants), making some minor modifications to the chest and belt area. I also found some elastic bandage in my medicine cabinet that was about 2″ wide (but less than 6″ long), which I used to form the shape of the Captain America shield.
There were two things that were really hard for me to figure out how to do: how to make the hat and how to make the belt buckle. I ended up using 1/4″ wide elastic bandage for both of them. The hat is very similar to an old hard hat that my son had from his construction days, so it was easy enough to mold those pieces together around his head. You could also use an old beret or something similar for this part of the costume.

You can make a Captain America costume without buying expensive materials or hiring someone to make it for you. The hardest part is getting the suit from the comic book. I’ve done it several times, and every time it’s been easier than the last.
It’s not about building the costume faster than you can buy parts for it or even making your own parts; it’s about making a costume that will work with very little money and which you can put together in one afternoon.
Here’s what you need:
1) A suit of some kind. This is the most important part of your costume, so don’t skimp on this. If you’re going to eventually make a display version, buy an inexpensive store-bought suit first, so that if you mess something up, you’ll have a backup costume. But if you’re going to wear this to parties or other events where people might see you, then buy a cheap suit first (except for pants). The price range here is $10-$30 (or less if you’re lucky) depending on what size and color shirt you choose to use as the shirt’s camouflage pattern. If you want to make a Captain America costume, you can’t just buy one. The first thing you need is an original Captain America costume, which is unlikely to be cheap. Then there are all the things everyone has to do when making a costume: cutting out the right pieces of the right material, sewing them together in the right way, and so on. There’s no way around this.
If you want to make a Captain America costume that isn’t shabby, work hard and save money. For example, buy used materials from eBay. You can find some great stuff there, but there are also some pieces that people have cut out or sewn together in ways that are very wrong for what they’re supposed to be used for (like strips of fabric not designed for use as a cape). The same trick works in fiction: some stories start with no characters at all, or only very minor ones, who do nothing but exist in their own minds.
