I’m a huge fan of fancy dress costumes and I’ve been a costume designer for nearly 30 years. It’s my job to create the costumes for theatre and television, but I also love dressing up in costume myself. My husband and I take part in lots of charity events every year and we like to wear fancy dress costumes.
In this blog I’ll be sharing some of my favourite fancy dress costumes with you. There are so many different styles and materials to choose from, but that can be very confusing, especially if you’re buying online or making your own costume. Hopefully this blog will help you decide what costume is right for you.
Latex clothing is an alternative to leather. There are latex dresses, catsuits, corsets, stockings and clubwear to name but a few of the items available.
Leather is a natural fabric, made from the hides of animals. It acts as a natural insulator and is generally waterproof.
Latex comes from rubber trees. Latex clothes have to be powdered to get into and then polished with silicone oil once on to stop them sticking together. Latex can be stretched five times its normal size, so it can mould to your body shape and give you a sexy, tight fit.
Faux leather fabrics include PVC (vinyl) and PU (polyurethane). These are man made materials that look similar to leather, but are more affordable and often more durable than real leathers. They are often used in the making of fetish clothing items like corsets or catsuits. Faux leathers are also vegan friendly so they are favored by those who want to avoid using any animal products for ethical or environmental reasons.
Watching the Disney classic Toy Story recently, I was reminded of just how cool Woody is. The hat, the waistcoat, the boots and the lasso, it’s all so iconic. If you’re having a cowboy fancy dress party then Woody is an excellent choice. We’ve put together a guide to dressing up like Woody.
The shirt
