New High School Musical Movie in The Works

A new High School Musical movie is in the works, Disney Channel announced on Sunday.

The TV movie franchise launched a decade ago with High School Musical and continued through High School Musical 2 and High School Musical 3: Senior Year. The first two films aired on Disney Channel, while the third was released theatrically. All three starred Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Corbin Bleu and Ashley Tisdale as teenagers at East High who sing and dance their way through high school.

The new film will take place at East High, introducing new students and staff members to go along with a new story line. Original cast members are not expected to appear in this installment of the franchise, but they are not ruled out entirely.

A new “High School Musical” movie is in the works, Disney Channel announced on Tuesday.

The as-yet-untitled project will be produced by Kenny Ortega, who directed all three of the original films. The movie will take place at a new location and will feature new characters and plotlines.

Ortega said in a statement that he’s been talking with Disney about making another “High School Musical” movie for some time.

“We have decided to start a search for a new group of fresh and exciting young stars to bring these characters to life,” he said.

He added that the film will begin shooting later this year and is expected to premiere on the network in 2010.

High School Musical 4 is coming back to East High.

E! News has learned that Disney Channel is in the early stages of development on a fourth installment of the popular franchise, which launched in 2006 and starred Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman.

According to a source, High School Musical 4 will take place at East High—where all three movies were shot—but with an entirely new group of students. And if you’re wondering what became of Troy, Gabriella and Sharpay after graduation, you’ll probably get some answers.

A source says the new installment will feature “a mix of new and familiar faces” as well as “some surprises” for fans. It’s unclear if any of the original cast members will reprise their roles or return to cameo in the film.

Disney is currently developing a new movie based on High School Musical, Variety reports.

Mark Swift, who co-wrote Baywatch, is set to write the screenplay for the project, which is being described as a “reimagining” and not a reboot. The new movie won’t be a direct sequel to the original trilogy, and it won’t star the original cast — including Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.

The news arrives nearly 10 years after the 2006 premiere of High School Musical, an original Disney Channel movie about two high school students — Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) — who discover their love of singing during auditions for the school musical. The film spawned two sequels in 2007 and 2008.

In 2013, High School Musical’s stars reunited at the MTV Video Music Awards to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR is being released to theaters on October 24, 2008 and Disney is already in the works of creating a fourth movie.

This time they’re taking it back to square one and making it a TV movie, as opposed to a full-on theater release. The story will be about the auditions for the high school musical and will answer questions like why were Gabriella, Taylor, and Sharpay chosen for the musical.

The plot will also focus on how Troy, Gabriella, Chad, and Taylor got their start at East High. The new movie will be called HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL: AUDITIONS and will feature new students as well as new stars.

Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) and Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) are trying to figure out if their relationship can survive Troy’s commitment to basketball and Gabriella’s audition for the winter musical.

Chad Danforth (Corbin Bleu) is facing an uncertain future with his basketball scholarship in doubt. Meanwhile, Taylor McKessie (Monique Coleman) discovers her own talents when she learns she has been accepted into the prestigious Stanford University. Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) is

Deadline is reporting that Disney has tapped High School Musical director Kenny Ortega to direct a new film about the behind-the-scenes drama of putting on a high school musical.

Ortega is no stranger to the genre, having directed the first three High School Musicals and written one of them (2006’s High School Musical 2). This new movie was written by Dan Berendsen, who wrote the third installment of HSM and a few episodes of Hannah Montana. The film “depicts the auditions for a high school musical as a competition between two very different girls.”

It’s unclear at this point whether this will be another television movie or a full theatrical release, but it’s probably safe to assume that it will fall into Disney’s lucrative TV-to-DVD pipeline.

Disney is working on a new High School Musical movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the company hopes to launch a new trilogy of films with a TV special that will air in 2020.

The original High School Musical film premiered on Disney Channel in 2006 and followed the lives of teenagers at East High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as they starred in a school production. The movie was one of the channel’s biggest hits, spawning two sequels and numerous spin-offs including live tours, stage productions and even an ice show.

The new film will reportedly focus on a new generation of characters. Kenny Ortega, who previously directed the first three films as well as Michael Jackson’s This Is It concert series, will return to direct the TV special and serve as executive producer for the trilogy.
