Nicole Watches American Dad!
This week’s episode is one of the most disturbing of the series for me. I’m not sure why I find it so disturbing, but it does have to do with a freaky monster/alien (Snot and his lizard-human hybrid baby) and a very creepy sequence from the movie that Steve and Snot create. But I’ll get to that later.
There are two major storylines in this episode. The first revolves around Hayley’s boyfriend Jeff and Roger’s jealousy of him. The second revolves around Steve, who wants to make a movie.
The Jeff storyline is a pretty standard sitcom type story, where Roger tries to break up Hayley and Jeff because he feels threatened by Jeff’s relationship with her, but his attempts are foiled by his own stupidity. It’s very funny at times, but nothing ground breaking.
There is one thing that surprised me about this storyline though: it breaks one of the rules of sitcoms. At the end of the episode, Hayley and Jeff break up because she finds out that a kiss he gave her wasn’t spontaneous (he’d rehearsed it), and that really annoys her.
Hi! I’m Nicole. I’m a fan of the show American Dad, and this is my blog about it. I’ll be posting my thoughts on each episode every week. If you have any thoughts or questions, please feel free to contact me via email at shegocostume@gmail.com.
This is the first in a series of posts where I will be watching, reviewing, and analyzing all of Season 1 of American Dad. Did you know that this show has been around for 5 years? Or that there are already 5 seasons worth of episodes? Because I didn’t. I’m going to have a lot of work to do.
I’ve never been much of an animated show watcher. The only ones I ever watched were South Park, Family Guy (American Dad’s sister show), King of the Hill, and The Simpsons (and American Dad). It’s not even so much that I don’t want to watch them as it is that I’ve always had an attention span that maxes out at 15 minutes and so cartoons have been too slow for me.
But once I started watching American Dad it was like my eyes were opened. Not only was it funny, but it was also extremely well written with amazing characters. I think my favorite thing about this show is that each episode focuses on one or two members of the family and really develops their character. By the end of this season you know exactly who each member of the Smith family is, their likes, dislikes, motivations, favorite colors, etc. At least you know everything they’re willing to tell
So I’m watching the latest American Dad episode. Which is freaking hilarious, by the way. It’s mostly a Stan episode, where he gets into an argument with Francine over what to do with an old time capsule they find in the yard. There is a hilarious scene where he imagines his life if he had followed all of Francine’s advice.
He’s been a postal worker for 30 years, working in the same little town, and Francine works at a gift shop, and they have 3 daughters who are all just as dull (and probably as slutty) as their mother. One is named after her. The other two are “Jenny” and “Mindy”. All 3 girls apparently work at the gift store too, and all three are dating the same guy: Joey Fiskerton. Who Stan hates for some reason.
All 3 of them get pregnant at the same time, so Francine insists on having a natural childbirth…with no drugs or anything. I guess she doesn’t want to set a bad example for her daughters? But her daughters don’t seem to care about anything, so I don’t know why she would think that matters to them at all.
So there’s this part where Francine is giving birth and Stan
Nicole: I’m not really sure how to go about this. This is a long one, so grab the popcorn and pull up a chair; we’ve got a lot of ground to cover.
As mentioned in my previous post, I decided early on that I wanted to dress as Shego from Kim Possible for Halloween. I didn’t want to make a trip to the mall just to buy a costume (though I did eventually; more on that later), so I decided to attempt my own version. And since I had never done anything like this before, I figured it would be fun to document the process for posterity.
I started by doing some research online. To my surprise, there was little information available about this particular character. The only real wealth of info came from a site called DisneyBound, which has quite an extensive gallery of different versions of Shego based on color schemes and seasons. The DisneyBound site made reference to Shego being essentially a palette swap of Kim Possible with “minor tweaks and modifications,” but there was nothing useful detailed about those tweaks and modifications beyond hairstyle and clothing colors.
