Overcoming Shyness

My name is Jessica. I’m 28 years old and I live in New York City. I am a very shy person, but I’m working on it.

I used to think that shy people were weak and weird. Now I know that being shy is just another part of being human. My goal is to help other shy people overcome their shyness and promote a healthy self-esteem.

I hope you will join me on my journey!

Many of us deal with shyness on a daily basis. It can be debilitating, affecting our relationships and our self-esteem. We want to help you learn how to overcome shyness, using a variety of techniques and resources.

If you’ve been following this blog for awhile, you’ll know that I have social anxiety and have done things to overcome it. I’m very happy and proud to say that I no longer have any anxiety whatsoever in public situations.

I’ve been reading a lot of books lately on self-esteem, self-confidence and shyness, since I think it’s important to understand the psychology behind overcoming social anxiety. It seems like many people who are shy don’t realize that they can overcome their shyness, or at least lessen their shyness so it’s more manageable.

I would recommend reading The Shyness Breakthrough by Bernardo Carducci Ph.D. if you are interested in learning more about shyness and how to overcome it.

When I was a kid, I had an unusually hard time making friends. I eventually got past the problem, but it wasn’t easy. I think some of what I did might be helpful to other kids in the same situation, so I wrote this FAQ.

The first thing you should know is that shyness and low self-esteem are not your fault.

As the only girl in a family of boys, I was starved for anything having to do with all things girly. My mother, being an accomplished seamstress, sewed my dance recital costumes, Halloween costumes and even my prom dress. As I got older, I would spend hours sitting in her sewing room watching her work. The magical transformations from a piece of fabric to a fully finished garment were amazing to me.

I still remember sitting on the floor trying to learn how to sew. The tools weren’t complicated; a needle and thread were all that was needed for me to create a potholder or a doll’s dress. But it wasn’t long until I started using Mom’s real sewing machine and even designing my own clothes.

Little did I know at the time that my mother was teaching me more than just sewing. She also taught me that I could be anything I wanted to be and do anything I wanted to do as long as I wasn’t afraid of making mistakes or of failing along the way.

I love the movie Lilo and Stitch. I remember when it came out in theaters in 2002. My sister and I had seen the previews for the movie and we both thought it looked like a funny, cute movie we would like.

I saw Lilo and Stitch over 10 times in theaters. I was obsessed with the movie! I loved everything about it: the story, the characters, the songs, everything! It quickly became my favorite movie of all time (and still is to this day).

When Halloween came around that year, I really wanted to dress up as one of the characters from the movie for Halloween. However, my mom said that she didn’t think any of us girls would want to dress up as a character from that movie because none of the main characters were girls.

I was disappointed but decided not to mention it again.
