My first sewing experience was with my grandmother’s wedding dress so I have a soft spot for anything that involves sewing. The thing I’ve always liked most about sewing is being able to create something that would otherwise take hours or days to make by someone else.*fn1

I can’t even begin to describe how much I love teletubbies. They’re my favourite kids show ever and I’ve always been fascinated by them. I’ve been wanting to make a costume for the longest time but doing so seemed like a very difficult task which would take a very long time and be very expensive (for me and my parents).

I must say that it took me less than half an hour and cost me under $10. Below is what materials I used:

2 yard of white cotton fabric, 1/2 yard of brown cotton fabric, 2 yards of brown felt (used for the hat), 1/2 yard of black felt (to round out the top part), 1/4 yard of green felt (to round out the bottom part) and 3 inches of elastic in 2 colors (white and black).

I also got some yellow string to give it that nice glow effect. All in all, this costume cost me about $15 altogether and took me less than an hour to make. The whole process is quite simple if you know what you’re doing with your scissors.

You can buy a costume, or you can make your own. In the first case, all you get is a costume: an expensive, complicated thing that looks great when you wear it but takes up a lot of space and, like most costumes, is only worn once. In the second case, you get a costume that is unique to you and also lasts for years.

When I was a kid I went to a costume party where people were given free dinner tickets for coming dressed as their favorite superhero. I showed up with my mom in her teletubbies costume. It was the best costume of the night. Everyone wanted to take pictures with us and ask questions about our costumes. And it was especially fun because we had so much fun doing it: she didn’t have to be in character and she could dress herself without feeling like she needed to wear something special every day just because we lived in New York City and didn’t have a backyard or part of the apartment where we could hang out in our pajamas all day long.

It is not just your imagination: the teletubbies are real. They are two and a half feet tall, live in a teletube house, speak fluent English and can be made from anything you want.

You might think that a $50,000 “teletubbie” would cost more than just fabric, but you’d be wrong. You can make something very similar with stuff you probably already have around the house.

The Pirate Bay is a peer-to-peer BitTorrent site that allows you to download any file from the Internet. It has been operating since 2003, and it was raided by Swedish police in 2006. The site was shut down in April of 2012.

The Pirate Bay is an example of what I call an “infrastructural” service, because it connects people to information rather than providing its own content. I think of infrastructure as being defined by the things that facilitate cooperation: roads, highways, bridges, Wi-Fi routers and even teletubbies costumes.

Infrastructural services are becoming more important as we move away from central planning and toward a more decentralized society. Governments can no longer tax their subjects without leaving them with less money than before, so they have turned to other ways of taking money. Just as we rely on bridges and highways to connect towns and cities instead of building them ourselves, so governments have become dependent on taxes for funding.

In this case, The Pirate Bay is the bridge between individual users and information sources: it provides access to content that no one on his own could afford to download legally; its existence makes it possible for people to share files with one another; its operators take a cut from every file transferred through their
