The Do’s and Don’ts of an Olaf Costume:
Rule Number One: The Head
Olaf has a very distinct head shape. He has a large, round face with a smallish nose. It is important to have the right shape for the head, otherwise the costume will not look right. If you have access to a sewing machine, I suggest making your own Olaf head. You can find patterns on Pinterest, or make up your own pattern. For this Olaf, I used craft foam as the base for the head, which I then covered in white fabric. I sewed the eyes on with black thread. The nose is also made from craft foam, which was glued on with hot glue.
The mouth is done in felt, which was cut to fit the shape of Olaf’s mouth and then glued down using hot glue. I also stitched around it using a zig-zag stitch. The eyebrows were cut out of black felt and glued down using hot glue as well.
I decided to stuff the inside of my head with cotton batting instead of using a plastic bag or water bottle to fill out my head. This made it less likely that my head would shift too much while wearing it and cause me to lose my vision

Step 1: Make the Headpiece

Olaf’s body is a series of spheres. To get his shape, you’ll need to start with a set of round balloons. You can use white, or any color that matches your outfit. Blow up the balloons to about half size and arrange them in an oval shape. For the tummy balloon, blow it up to about three-quarters full.
Be sure to leave a little room at the top so you can tie them off. If you want, you can put tape over the top of each balloon to secure them.
Next, take pieces of cardboard and make two circles that fit on your shoulders–these will be the bases for Olaf’s arms. Take two more pieces of cardboard and cut out two rectangles that go around your hips–these base pieces will give Olaf’s arms some support.

Materials:

White Gloves – These aren’t required but they do make for a nice touch when dressing up as Olaf. The gloves I used were from an old pair of ski gloves I had lying around the house. All I did was cover them in white fabric glue and then wrapped yarn around it until it looked like snow!
Black Shoes – Again not required
I’m going to be honest here: I had no idea who Olaf was until this movie came out. And even then, it took me a while to realize that he was the snowman. Now I don’t think I could make an Olaf costume any better than Disney has already done, so we’ll just look at what they have and see how to make it happen for your little one.
The first thing you can do is get a store-bought Olaf costume. These are made of very cheap materials and aren’t going to keep your kid warm in the slightest. The only thing they have going for them is that they have a hat that comes out of the top of them. If you are looking for something to keep your kid warm for trick-or-treating, then this isn’t it. However, if all you want is something that looks like Olaf, then these costumes work fine as long as you don’t mind your child being cold.
