The Perfect Homemade DeLorean

The Perfect Homemade DeLorean: A blog about making your own time machine for halloween.

My son wanted to be Marty McFly from Back to the Future for Halloween (he’s too young to remember seeing the movies, but he loved the cartoon series on Netflix.). I love making costumes, so I decided to try and make him a DeLorean time machine. It took a while, but it turned out great! I hope this guide helps you if you want to make one too!

I used a wagon as the base of the car. The wagon was $20 at Walmart, and it would have been cheaper at Target. I cut off the top part of the wagon so that it was flush with the bottom-most rail. I used wood screws to attach a piece of wood across each end of the wagon; these will be used as mounts for the front and rear axles.

The Perfect Homemade DeLorean is a blog about making your own time machine for halloween. I’m working on my costume as we speak and I’d like to share the process with you. Hopefully, this site will be helpful to anyone who wants to build a Time Machine in their spare time. This blog is best viewed on Firefox or Safari. In a previous post, I detailed how to make the costume of Marty McFly from the 1985 movie “Back to the Future”. If you missed it, check it out here: martymcflycostume.blogspot.com/2011/10/how-to-make-marty-mcfly-costume.html

Now that you have the right clothes, it’s time to build a perfect miniature replica of the time machine from the movie, which is none other than a modified DeLorean sports car!

For this project, you will need:

A cardboard box (the size doesn’t really matter)

A piece of poster board

A few sheets of newspaper or scrap paper

Glue (either hot glue or wood glue should work)

Paint (acrylic or spray paint)

Some aluminum foil and/or tin foil pans (optional)

After a few months of hard work, our DeLorean Time Machine costume is complete and ready to be shown off. This page will give you lots of ideas and tips on how to make your own.

This site was created for Marty McFly fans everywhere. I saw the movie “Back to the Future” back in 1985, and it had a huge impact on my life. I’ve watched the trilogy over and over again, and decided that I wanted to create an accurate model of the DeLorean Time Machine from the movies.

I started out just wanting to make a model car that looked like the time machine, but as I progressed I realized there are some details missing from most of the models available on the market. They all pretty much look like a DeLorean with a plastic flux capacitor stuck in the back. The goal of this site is to show you how to make your own DeLorean Time Machine using mostly parts you can buy at Home Depot, Radioshack and Pep Boys.

In order to recreate many of these details, I had to purchase original props from “Back to the Future” that were used in filming. Once I started looking into this, I discovered that there are several other people in Hollywood who own these props, as well as people all across the country who have built their own working time machines! There is even an annual convention held in Los Angeles called “Universal Studios Back to the Future Day”.

We cut the front bottom of the door to correct this. We used some trim that we got from a junk yard. The trim was originally chrome but we painted it black.

We had to add some material to the right side of the car because our doors were too long and were hitting the rear tires.

The delorean has some unique features that have to be replicated for an accurate costume. The most obvious are the gullwing doors, but there are also blower doors that suck in air from underneath the car (they are on the outside) and pop out windows (they only open).

Part of the reason I was so keen to build a time machine is that my son, who is seven, has been obsessed with Back to the Future since he first saw it. Since he’s never had the chance to watch a movie on VHS, or drink from an ice cold Pepsi Free, it’s not surprising that he doesn’t understand how different the world of 1985 really was.

I explained that when Marty McFly traveled back in time, he was able to talk on a phone and eat pizza because those things existed in 1985. But if he wanted to use an iPad or Skype or Google Maps, he would have been out of luck.

This led to what I thought was a pretty clever point: although Marty could have used a phone in 1955, it wouldn’t have worked because they didn’t have cell towers back then. So while Marty could have used some of the technology that existed in 1985, he couldn’t have used other technology because it didn’t exist yet.

My son looked at me like I was crazy. “Dad,” he said, “You can get on the internet anywhere.”
