Welcome to the Jungle

With the release of Lionsgate’s Power Ranger reboot (2017), we are introduced to a new generation of superheroes. The film has received mixed reviews, but the focus has been on the main character Jason Scott, who makes his debut as the Red Ranger.

Jason is a typical teenage rebel. He finds himself in detention with four other students: Kimberly Hart-the Pink Ranger; Zack Taylor-the Black Ranger; Trini Kwan-the Yellow Ranger; and Billy Cranston-the Blue Ranger. After being released from detention they discover an alien ship buried under earth’s surface. They soon realize that they have been given superhuman powers and must now unite to defeat Rita Repulsa-an alien conqueror who is bent on destroying earth.

The costumes for this reboot are much different from their predecessors. The new suits have more detailed designs and contain more armor. They also make use of more contemporary materials, such as spandex and latex.

The Power Rangers franchise is one of the most lucrative and influential franchises in the world. It has spawned video games, merchandising and even an entire convention called Power Morphicon. The first version of the show was created in 1993 and has been a huge success ever since. The reason for its enduring popularity is the fact that it caters to the young children demographic. Every year there is a new version of the show, with a new set of rangers and villains. This ensures that kids watch the show every year as they grow up, thus providing a steady stream of income for Saban Entertainment (the people who own Power Rangers).

The biggest drawback of this approach, however, is that it makes it difficult to make long term continuity plans for the show. For instance, there have been numerous instances where characters from previous seasons have returned only to be killed off again quickly because they didn’t fit in with the current season’s theme or plotline. The biggest example of this was when Tommy Oliver (played by Jason David Frank) appeared in Season 1 before being killed by Rita Repulsa (played by Elizabeth Banks).

Another problem with this approach is that it makes it difficult to create a cohesive mythology across different seasons as well. For instance, there are currently three versions

This Halloween, I decided to be a little creative with my costume. I didn’t want to do the typical “Lion” or “Witch” costume. I wanted my costume to be unique and give people something to talk about. So for this Halloween, I chose to be the Red Zeo Ranger.

How did I pull this off? Well, since there are no Red Zeo Rangers costumes anywhere on the web (I looked), I had to get a little creative and make my own. Below is more detail on how I made this costume.

The first thing I needed was a helmet. Luckily, there are some people out there who have made their own helmets as well. I found a guy on Etsy who makes his own Power Ranger helmets and decided to buy one of his red ranger helmets. It arrived in what looked like an ice cream bucket and inside was a styrofoam head wearing the helmet. It was pretty cool (no pun intended).

The helmet fit great and after cleaning it off with some windex, it looked amazing! Next step was making the rest of the outfit including the t-shirt, shoulder pads, belt buckle and power saber
