Going to your first cosplay convention can be overwhelming. So many people, so many costumes, so much to do! No worries, we’ve put together a few of our favorite pieces to help you design a great cosplay costume.

Just like in any other social situation, at a convention is important to make sure you look good and feel comfortable. For example, if you have long hair and don’t like it getting in your face all the time, then use some bobby pins or a headband to keep your hair out of the way. Also, if there are particular items you’re uncomfortable with wearing in public, don’t wear them! You don’t have to wear something that makes you feel uncomfortable just because it’s part of the costume.

Maybe you want to be recognized as a character, but don’t want to spend a lot of money buying something that could be better made by hand. Maybe you just want to wear something fun and different.

Whatever the reason, cosplay—short for “costume play”—is a fun way to let your creative juices flow and feel like a new person for the day. It can also be intimidating for beginners who have never created their own costumes before. But don’t worry! Whether it’s one day or a month in advance, there are ways to create your own cosplay without spending too much time or money. Here are some tips and tricks on how to make your own cosplay, step by step.

So you’ve been invited to a cosplay convention, and you’re excited to go. You knew what to expect at the last few, but this one is different. There are no special guests who have created characters that are your favorites, no artists or musicians who you particularly like. This one is just a regular cosplay convention, with all of the people who have been attending for years.

What do you wear? If in doubt, choose between the top three most popular costumes at most conventions. What are they? Let’s take a look:

1) A character from a major film or television series — preferably an ensemble piece — that has recently debuted or has a sequel or spinoff premiering soon.

2) A character from a new independent comic book series, which has recently debuted or has a new issue coming out soon.

3) A character from an animated television show (or movie) that will soon be available on DVD/VHS/Blu-ray Disc in the United States.

Note: All of the above costume choices should be for characters that are easy for newbies to make and pull off well. For example, it could be argued that The Joker from The Dark Knight is too difficult for newbies

The next convention that you attend will be here before you know it. Cosplay is a great thing to do, not just at conventions but anywhere, but it isn’t something that comes naturally to everyone.

This is because homemade costumes tend to look more realistic than store-bought ones, especially if they are made by experienced cosplayers who know what they are doing.
