Winnie-the-Pooh Costume

Winnie-the-Pooh Costume: A cute entertaining blog idea around the classic children’s Disney character.

Introduction

This is the basic Winnie-the-Pooh costume that I made for my son when he was one year old. This was my first experience in making a costume and it was so fun! The baby bear outfit looked darling on him and I could not resist making a Tigger outfit to match my daughter’s Tigger costume. Most of the materials I used were purchased at JoAnn Fabrics in the children’s section since it was for a baby, but if you don’t have a JoAnn’s nearby, then your local fabric store will do. This project did take me several days to complete, as I had to order some of the materials online, but you could probably make this in less than a week if you have all the materials on hand.

Materials List:

2 yards of yellow fleece (for baby) or 2 yards of yellow flannel (for toddler)

1/2 yard thick black felt

2 yards white cotton fabric

2 yards orange cotton fabric

1/3 yard red cotton fabric

1/3 yard dark brown cotton fabric

For this costume I decided to go with a homemade option. I had originally purchased a bear costume at one of our local retailers. It was cute, but it wasn’t really enough for me. I wanted to make my son’s costume more special and personalized.

I also knew that he would not be able to wear his costume from year to year like he does with a Halloween costume so I wanted it to be something that would last and that he could wear over and over again, not just on Halloween night.

A few years ago, my mom asked me to come up with a Halloween costume for her. She wanted something warm and comfortable, but also unique and fun. I consider myself a bit of a Halloween costume connoisseur, so she was confident I would come up with something awesome.

I thought about the typical Halloween costumes that are available from stores, and none of them really appealed to me. The store-bought costumes are usually cheap-looking and uncomfortable. I’ve had better luck making my own costumes in the past, but this time I wanted to come up with something that didn’t require any sewing or construction skills.

My mom is an elementary school teacher, so she loves Pooh Bear stories. That was the inspiration for my Winnie-the-Pooh costume!

The Winnie-the-Pooh Costume consists of four basic pieces: The body suit, the headpiece, clothing accessories, and footwear.

In this tutorial we’ll go through the steps of making a Winnie-the-Pooh costume. The costume is designed to be worn by an adult male, but it can easily be adapted for female or children.

We start by preparing the base materials, then move on to sewing and gluing the various parts of the costume. We will also show you how to make a honey pot that you can use to carry your keys, wallet and other personal items.

This project will take about 10 hours to complete, with most of the time being spent in cutting and sewing the base materials.

Winnie-the-Pooh is a classic. I’ve always wanted to do a costume based on this loveable character and last year, my daughter and I decided it was time.

We used foam floor mats to make the body of the costume. The bear itself took about one 2’x2′ mat. I cut out the rectangular shape of his body, then rounded out his tummy and rear end. My daughter didn’t want the costume to be too bulky so we left plenty of room around her arms and legs. I then painted the body yellow, leaving about an inch or so at the bottom for where it would be bringing together with Velcro strips.

The headpiece is made from a 1/4″ thick foam sheet (you can get it at fabric stores). The ears are made from craft foam sheets and glued into place on top of the head piece. The eyes were simply white felt circles with black dots in the middle (and glued into place).

The nose was made from two pieces of styrofoam balls glued together with a small amount of brown acrylic paint dabbed on top.

The mouth was made using black electrical tape (I recommend using heat shrink tubing as it conforms better to shapes).
