1. The Pirates of the Caribbean are no strangers to Halloween, appearing every year in different costumes and disguises at parties around the world. But it is always important to know who looks the part of a pirate and who doesn’t before throwing on that pirate hat, because the difference between a good costume and a bad costume can be very slim.
2. A surprising number of people dress up like pirates for Halloween each year, so it’s important to know how to best take advantage of this trend. The key to being a good pirate is looking like one: an eye patch and a parrot are not enough! Let’s look at some examples of both good and bad pirate costumes, as well as what you’ll need to look your best this Halloween season.
3. If you’re not sure whether or not you have everything needed for the perfect pirate costume, here’s a quick checklist: hat (with or without feather), eye patch (optional), bandana/scarf (optional), sword or pistol (optional). Of course there are many more things that pirates may carry with them such as treasure chests full of gold coins and jewels, but these are just some basics which should help get you started on your journey towards becoming one of history’s most feared pirates.
While there are many factors that play into looking the part of a pirate, there are a few standouts that help make the look. Even if we don’t actively think about them, most of us have a mental image of what pirates look like. That image is influenced by years of media bombardment with images of pirates in movies, television, books and video games.
While most people know what to wear when they dress up as a pirate for Halloween, I thought it might be interesting to see if anyone looked like a real pirate. If a person was going to live among pirates, one would think they’d take their appearance seriously. After all, they were trying to blend in without being recognized as an imposter.
Even though some people want to believe otherwise, pirates didn’t wear eye patches or hook hands because those injuries hadn’t happened yet. Eye-patches were used to keep one eye adjusted to darkness while the other was used in daylight. Pirates were also known to use two different colored ribbons in their hair or on their hats to denote marital status or even age. As for parrots and peg legs; there’s no evidence that either ever went together with pirates.
Pirate fashion is a tricky thing. Sure, it’s easy to slap on an eye patch and a bandana, but people can tell if you’re trying too hard. Or not hard enough. Or if you’re wearing a pink eye patch.
To help you avoid the fashion faux pas that could come with this costume, we’ve put together a list of those who nailed their pirate costumes and those who didn’t.
As we all know, the biggest danger of sailing the seven seas is that you might be attacked by pirates. But before you can defend yourself from their cutlass and pistol attacks, you have to be able to spot them. And when it comes to spotting these modern pirates, it ain’t easy!

Pirates aren’t just men anymore. These days women can be pirates too and they look pretty good doing it too!
The stereotypical pirate costume is a black shirt and pants with a red or white bandana tied around the head or neck. Black leather boots, a belt and a sword round out the look. But why are these items part of the pirate persona?
The shirt and pants: The standard uniform for sailors in the 17th century was loose-fitting white pants and shirts that were tucked into their pants. In order to stay cool, sailors rolled up their sleeves, even though this meant getting sunburned arms.
Bandana: Bandanas were a common fashion accessory for men in Europe in the mid-17th century, so it’s not surprising that they caught on with pirates as well.
Boots: Pirates often wore high leather boots, but not because they were fancy. They wore them because leather was waterproof and leather boots kept their feet dry when they were trudging through swamps or across muddy land.
Swords: Swords were carried by officers on pirate ships, not crewmen. Pirates didn’t always carry pistols on their hips as depicted in movies and television shows. Pistols were reserved for officers only because they were more expensive than swords and harder to come by.
