The National Retail Federation estimates that Americans will spend $3.2 billion on Halloween costumes this year. That’s a lot of money on something that is going to be worn once and then put in the back of the closet. Here are some ideas for inexpensive, homemade costumes that can be made with items you already have or can easily purchase at a local thrift store.

1. Chucky: If you don’t know who Chucky is, he is the possessed doll in “Child’s Play” and its many sequels. This costume can be easily made with a striped shirt, overalls and a red wig (or red hair spray). A knife or other toy weapon is optional.

2. Movie Character: Find an iconic movie character like Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz,” Indiana Jones or Forrest Gump and get creative with what you have on hand (you can find some great ideas here).

3. Sports Fan: If your child loves sports, dress him up as his favorite team member or in his favorite team’s uniform (if you are lucky enough to have one lying around). Add face paint for extra effect!

4. Ghost: Cut eye holes out of an old white sheet and voila! You have a ghost costume!

5. Animal

If your child is wearing a store bought costume or a mask, it could take precious time for emergency personnel to get the child out of the costume if there was a need to do so quickly. If you choose to purchase or rent a costume, make sure it has been safety tested and carries a flame resistant label.
