1. Choose your fabric!

For this mermaid costume I used 2 yards of a shiny, blue fabric and 1 yard of a sheer, sparkly organza in teal.

2. Cut out the pattern pieces.

To make your own mermaid costume you will need to draft or find a pattern for the top/corset and for the tail piece. To do this I used two simple patterns: Simplicity 3935 (for the top) and McCalls 6146 (for the tail). If you want to use these patterns as well you will have to add seam allowances and lengthen the bodice pattern piece so that it is longer than waist length.

3. Sew the top/corset pieces together.

After marking and cutting out the pieces, sew them together according to the directions that come with your pattern and finish all raw edges. For my corset, I made a few changes to the original design by adding boning channels along all seams where there would be boning (including those where there was no boning in the original design) and added eyelets along one side so that I could lace

It’s that time of year when everyone is looking to be a great mermaid costume. Well you’re in luck because there are 7 amazing tips on making a great looking mermaid costume. Here they are:

1) Get some plastic wrap, tape and aluminum foil. Wrap the plastic wrap around your waist and chest (if desired). Then put on the aluminum foil over the plastic wrap. You can also use pieces of cardboard instead of the aluminum foil if you prefer a more sparkly look.

2) For an added touch, add some glittery body paint to your face – this will make it even cooler!

3) To get the best results, use a light colored fabric for your dress or skirt and a darker color for your torso & legs. For example: black pants with orange shirt would look really cool! If possible try using different fabrics together like chiffon over satin; this will give off more sparkle when lit up by flash photography or other light sources at night events such as Halloween parties etc…

Mermaid costumes are a hot costume trend for Halloween, costume parties and anything in between. Making your own mermaid costume is easier than you think, and it can save you a lot of money too. This article will give you 7 easy tips for making an excellent mermaid costume without having to spend a lot of money.

Tip 1: Find A Pattern

The easiest way to make any costume is to find a pattern for it. Patterns are readily available at most craft stores and usually only cost about $5 each. To make the outfit look more like a mermaid’s outfit, use a pattern that has an asymmetrical bottom or tail (see the 2nd costume pictured below). This will add to the mermaid effect of your outfit.

Tip 2: Pick The Right Fabric

In addition to finding the right pattern, you should also pick the right fabric. Fabric can be expensive, so don’t be afraid to shop around and find the best sales. Look for fabrics that have some shimmer or shine to them; this will help your outfit look more authentic. Also try to avoid fabrics that wrinkle easily or ones that are difficult to work with. Cotton blends are usually your best bet when it comes to working with fabric yourself.

Tip 3: Make The

Fashion is a wonderful thing. You can dress up in some of the most beautiful and awe inspiring outfits, and yet not be taken seriously or even be laughed at. If you want to make a mermaid costume that looks gorgeous, and yet is not taken as a joke, here are 7 tips to help you look the part.

1. Get the right materials:

It might seem obvious that if you want to look like a mermaid, then you need to wear a fish tail. You can buy pre-made ones or make your own. If you decide to go for the latter option, then it’s important to get the right materials for it.

2. Don’t use cheap elastic:

Elastic is an important component for any costume; however, using cheap elastic could end up ruining your costume…literally! Cheap elastic will not provide strength, and would be a waste of time and money.

3. Cut out your pieces:

Once you have sorted out all your materials, you now need to cut out your pieces for your mermaid costume. Make sure that each piece fits well onto each other before sewing them together.

Here are some tips on how to make a good looking mermaid costume.

Wear a skin color bikini or swimsuit.

Use metallic fabric paint and puff paints to add designs to your swimsuit. You can also use temporary tattoos.

Make the top of the bikini out of sequin fabric. If you don’t like the way that looks you can always cover it with another fabric or just leave it plain.

Using a leotard or tights, add fins on the sides with green and blue fabric paint.

If you want to, you can also add fins on your arms and legs by gluing green and blue pieces of felt onto them. You can find these in any craft store.

You can also make a tail for yourself, but it’s not necessary if all you want is just an upper body costume.

The final touch is some green face paint to match your costume!

Choosing a costume for Halloween or a themed event can be a difficult task. Sometimes, you want something unique and creative but conventional costumes are just too boring. Here are some tips on how to make a mermaid costume so you can impress your friends, family and even yourself.

1. Make A Tail

You can purchase a tail online or at costume shops, but they look cheap and it’s really easy to make your own. You’ll need a few yards of fabric, such as velvet or satin, in the color of your choice. Many people choose green with blue or purple accents because it’s very mermaid-like; however, you can use any color you want so long as it matches with the next steps.

2. Add Scales

Mermaids have scales all over their body, so adding them to your costume will really sell it. There are many ways that this can be achieved – you could use sequins or fish scales purchased at craft shops and sew them onto the fabric of your tail. Another option is buying adhesive-backed fabric from an art shop and cutting it into scale shapes to place all over the tail. If you’re feeling especially creative, you could even paint them on with fabric paint!
