How to Make a Mulan Costume for Halloween

Hello! If you’re here, it’s probably because you want to make your own Mulan costume. Well, you’ve come to the right place. I have put together all of the information you will need (and more) to make your own Mulan costume.

Why? Because there are very few Mulan costumes on the market that are actually accurate. Also, most of them are cheaply made and fall apart after one use. So why not make your own? It’s not as difficult as it may seem and it can be fun!

When I was 4 years old, I desperately wanted to be Mulan for Halloween. Unfortunately, it was not a costume readily available at Halloween stores, so my mother and I had to make it ourselves. We started with the pants. Since we didn’t have any sewing experience, they came out larger than they should have been and looked more like MC Hammer pants than the tight-fitting Chinese garb Mulan wears. We used red fabric for the top of the costume (as opposed to the black worn by Mulan). The shirt lacked a collar and sash and just looked wrong overall. My mom tried to remedy this by adding “beads” on a string around my neck and using a red ribbon as a sash for the waist. It still looked wrong, but it was better than nothing.

I did wear that costume every day for three months after Halloween because I loved it so much! But after that, I decided to try again at making an accurate version of the costume when I was 9 years old. It took quite a while to gather all of the supplies needed (lace, silk material, ribbon), but once we had everything, the construction of the shirt went quickly. The pants were easier to sew since we had more experience this time around.

Making a Mulan costume is quite easy. You can make your own very easily with just a few supplies, or you can buy or rent a costume. I am going to show you how to make your own costume.

Step 1: What You Need

You will need:

-a pair of brown pants

-a red shirt

-red ribbon

-knitting needles (optional)

-a sewing machine (optional)

A Mulan costume can be difficult to make. But that shouldn’t stop you from making her costume. This is a tutorial on how to make a simple Mulan costume.

Step 1. Get Red and Gold fabric.

Step 2. Cut the fabric in half and sew the sides together to make it a tube top and bottom. Then cut the sleeves and sew them into the top of the tube top.

Step 3. Cut the bottom of the tube skirt so it forms an A-line skirt, and hem it at least an inch higher than you want it to be so that when you tie your belt around your waist, it won’t show above your belt.

Step 4: Make a wig out of yarn by cutting long pieces of yarn and tying them onto a hairband until you have the length of hair that you want. Then put some gold ribbon around the hairband so that it will look like her hair ribbon from the movie.

Step 5: Put on your costume with black leggings underneath and a pair of black boots over top, and you are all set!

Before you start sewing, you will want to find a good picture of the costume. If you do not know what Mulan looks like, then this step is crucial. Since there are lots of different pictures of Mulan out there, it’s best to choose one costume and stick with it.

First, find a white dress that can be used as the base for your costume. If you cannot find an exact match for the dress in the picture (not likely), then just get something that is similarly styled. It doesn’t have to be long-sleeved or high-necked, but at least make sure it has sleeves.

Next, you’ll need fabric for your armor and robe. You don’t have to use satin; in fact, quilting cotton will probably work better because it’s easier to sew with (and cheaper). Find two colors that you like together and buy enough fabric to fit around your body plus a few inches for seams.

For your hair, you will need a wig. Make sure that it is straight so that you can braid it easily. A wig cap might help if you want to keep your hair under control while wearing the wig. You’ll also need ribbon or some other material that can be tied into bows

“Be a man” my father said as he handed me a knife. I didn’t know what kind of man he wanted me to be but I knew I couldn’t be one while wearing a dress. At least, that’s what I thought at the time.

My mother had other ideas. She sat me down and told me about a young woman named Mulan who lived in ancient China. When the Huns invaded her country, Mulan disguised herself as a man and took her father’s place in the army.

Mulan is one of my favorite Disney Princesses because she’s not like other girls in fairy tales. She doesn’t wait for Prince Charming to come along and sweep her off her feet; instead she fights for what she wants by using her wit and intelligence to outsmart those who stand against her.

I wanted to be like Mulan when I grew up so I decided it was time to make amends with dresses…
