Why should I make my own costume?
Why not just buy one at the store? For one thing, the store costumes are usually pretty flimsy and cheap-looking. They’re also short, which is not very flattering if you have nice legs. (And if you don’t have nice legs, they’ll make you look worse.) Plus they’re not very durable — they tend to fall apart after just one or two wears. And finally if you’re planning on wearing it more than once or twice, it’s just cheaper to make it yourself!

Making the bunny ears:
The most important part of the costume are the ears. As they are large and sit on the head, any faults will be immediately obvious. To make them, I used wire from an old hanger to give a strong structure. This was then wrapped in cotton wool to give a soft base for the fabric to rest on (I used red fabric for this). The fabric was then glued over the top of this and shaped into the correct form. A button was added to each ear to allow them to be fixed onto a headband.
Making the headband:
I used some black fabric folded in half and stitched along the edges. Attached to either end was an elastic loop that would go around the back of my head so that the headband would stay in place without being too tight or uncomfortable. Bunnies at the original Playboy Clubs that operated between 1960 and 1988 were selected through auditions, received a standardized training, and wore a costume called a “bunny suit” inspired by the tuxedo-wearing Playboy rabbit mascot, consisting of a strapless corset teddy, bunny ears, black pantyhose, a bow tie, a collar, cuffs and a fluffy cottontail.
