Halloween is coming up, and that means costumes. But, there’s a new trend in costumes this year. It’s not superheroes or princesses, but something much darker and more chaotic: The Purge.
The Purge movies are about a dystopian future where all crime is legal for one night of the year. The night of the purge (which is indicated with a simple word on the screen: PURGE), people can murder each other, steal from each other, etc. The idea is to “purge” yourself of all your frustrations so you can live peacefully for the next 11 months of the year.
The first movie didn’t do that well in theaters, but it has gained fans as they have watched it on Netflix. And now with the sequel coming out later this month, Purge costumes are becoming more popular by the day.
In fact, there is even a company making Halloween masks based on the series. These masks are designed to be realistic and accurate representations of what you see in The Purge movies. Halloween has never been a holiday for Purge Costumes, but it’s turned into one. In 2014, the horror film The Purge: Anarchy was released as a sequel to the 2013 film The Purge. The films were created by James DeMonaco and inspired by his own fear of the United States government.
The films follow a dystopian view of our future where the government allows its citizens to engage in criminal activity one night a year, called “Purge Night.” At this time, all emergency services are suspended, and all crime is legal.
It’s an interesting idea that has become increasingly popular with young adults on Halloween. The films have grossed nearly $200 million worldwide. With great popularity comes great responsibility. Unfortunately, some people have not taken this idea to heart.
Halloween is usually a fun time for kids to go trick-or-treating and for adults to dress up and get together with friends for parties.
It’s Halloween, and if you’re like me, you’ve noticed an uptick in the number of “Purge” masks and costumes this year. The Purge is a movie and TV show about a dystopian United States where all crime is legal for a 24-hour period once per year. It has been so successful that there have been three movies and a TV show based on it.
I love The Purge. I watch it every time it comes on television, and I’ll pay to see the movies in theaters. But, if I’m being honest with myself, the costume trend makes me a little uncomfortable.
It would be easy — and not wrong — to say that people dressing up as the characters from The Purge are just having fun with friends or making money by selling costumes. But given the recent tragedies that have occurred across the country, maybe dressing up as characters who terrorize innocent people isn’t such a good idea after all.
The producers of The Purge must be aware of this. If they were not concerned about how their products are perceived, they wouldn’t have cast actress Lena Headey in their television ads for American Horror Story: Apocalypse; she is best known for her role as Cersei Lannister on Game of Thrones. In

If you haven’t noticed, Halloween is creeping up on us. The candy aisles of every store are stocked with fun-sized chocolate bars and lollipops, and people are beginning to plan out their “costumes” (or lack thereof). As an avid watcher of The Purge television series and fan of the franchise overall, I couldn’t help but notice the potential influx of “Purge” costumes this year.
What exactly is a “Purge” costume? Well, it’s simply something worn during the annual holiday in which all crime is legal for 12 hours. In the second installment of the film series, Anarchy, we see a wide range of costumes worn by characters who have taken advantage of the Purge to live out their craziest fantasies. From Donald Trump masks to BDSM clothing, this movie truly does cover all bases.
In fact, in 2014 when Anarchy was released in theatres there was an actual increase in Purge costumes being sold. Stores such as Spencer’s Gifts had a wide range of masks from the movie itself and even featured them on their website as part of their costume selection (See Figure 1).

In recent years, Halloween costumes have followed an interesting trend: the idea of wearing a costume that represents something negative about society. For example, in 2014, media sources reported that the top selling Halloween costumes for adults included Ebola Containment Suits and Ray Rice Jersey’s, two items that were talked about all year in the media.
