The retailer has released its annual list of the most popular costumes in each state. This year’s top pick is the Fortnite Skull Trooper costume, which is the number one costume in 11 states including California, Texas and New York.
The list is based on sales data from Amazon and Google trends data from September and October, so it only reflects costumes that are currently available to buy. If you’re still looking for inspiration, we’ve rounded up some of the most popular costumes below.

Once again a superhero will be one of the most popular costumes this year. If you’re a Marvel Comics fan, there’s the cool Thor costume, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and Spider-Man. A BuzzFeed investigation found that Amazon’s “most popular” Halloween costumes state that they are “Amazon’s Choice,” but there’s no clear indication of what that means.
In an attempt to figure out how Amazon comes up with its picks, BuzzFeed News looked at the most-purchased costume on the website for each day in October — something a spokesperson for Amazon said was determined by customer purchases.
The results showed that the “most popular” costume on Amazon didn’t always match up with the best-rated or best-selling costumes on the website.
Amazon declined to comment on why there was a discrepancy between the most-purchased costumes and its “Choice” pick, or how it defines its use of the term.
Many of the “Choice” costumes were also ranked as top sellers in their categories, but not all of them were. For example, a plush lion costume for babies received 4.8 stars out of 5 and was ranked as one of the top sellers in its category, but it was not deemed an “Amazon Choice.” A $10 witch hat wasn’t ranked as one of the top sellers in its category and had only 1 star out of 5 from customer reviews, yet it was dubbed an “Amazon Choice.”
