So you’ve been invited to a Renaissance festival and you want to go, but you don’t know what to wear. You’ve decided that you want to look as though you were there or had stepped off the screen from Game of Thrones, but how?
First, do your research. You may have a friend who has attended before and can give advice; you may be going with a group who is renting costumes; or you may be an individual who wants to wear something appropriate. In any case, the first thing to do is research what people wore in the period in which your festival will be set.
Sometimes this is easy and sometimes it’s harder. If your festival is a Viking-themed one, it should be fairly simple to find information on what the Norsemen wore. But if it is more generic—setting itself in a fictional time period like “the middle ages”—it may be harder. If so, start broad and narrow down the time period: was your festival set in 1066? 1500? The sixteenth century was very different from the twelfth century!

First and foremost, Research is Key!
No matter what you decide to dress as, do some research on your character. What was their social class? Were they a man or woman? Do they have any defining characteristics? Most importantly, how did they dress?
For example: If you want to be a peasant (a lower-class person) then it would be good to know that peasants wore second-hand clothing. Their clothing was usually patched and mended; not new and fancy. A peasant’s clothing might also be darker in color because bright colors were expensive to make in Medieval times.
In contrast, if you wanted to be an aristocrat (a nobleman), your clothing would most likely be very fancy with lots of frills and lace!

3. Don’t go on an empty stomach. You may be able to get away with skipping breakfast, but you’ll want lunch, and probably a snack or two in between! It’s okay to go offsite for food, but if you do make sure you get back in time for events you want to see!
4. Wear something that makes you feel good about yourself. Whether it’s a costume, or just some fantasy jewelry, if it makes you look good and feel good then wear it! (Just remember nothing too revealing please!)
5. Bring your camera! Not only is it great for memories, but also for pictures of cool things like costumes, props and even the items from vendors that are “must haves!”
