One thing I’m often asked is what materials I use. This is a fair question, as it’s not always clear from the pictures exactly what the fabric, trim and accessories are – but that’s partly because I aim to make everything look as authentic as possible.

The only exception to this is the hat band which, in the pictures you see here, is made of faux leather. This is mostly for durability as we use it over and over again for fittings and photos! The actual hat bands we make for customers will be made from either hand-tooled leather or hand-painted canvas, depending on the customer’s preference.

As for the hat itself, it’s made from a very sturdy wool felt (we don’t use cheaper acrylic felt as it doesn’t hold up nearly as well). It’s also blocked which gives it its shape (the hat in the photos here has not been blocked but still looks nice!).

The buckle on the sash is solid brass. The buttons are all hand-made by us; they start out being blank buttons that we then glaze and “age” to give them an authentic appearance.
