What is Steampunk?
Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction and fantasy that includes technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Some examples of this are: 1) clothing that may appear as if it is made of copper, brown leather or gears, 2) personal gadgets that are designed with exposed gears and mechanical parts, 3) houses and furniture that are of Victorian style (Victorian Era). Often, people want to show up at a steampunk event in costume but do not know where to start. Many of you who are new to Steampunk ask me where you should start when trying to create a costume, my response is always the same: put it to the test! What do I mean by this? I mean when creating your costume, ask yourself these questions… 1) Can I wear this everyday and not feel like I am in costume? 2) Does this piece look like it could be used for another purpose? 3) How many different ways can I wear this item? 4) How many different looks can I get out of this item? If you can’t answer yes to these questions, then your item may not be Steampunk enough. The best way to help determine if an item is Steampunk is to ask yourself how you would use the item if there were no electricity. If you cannot find a way that your item can be used without electricity, then it is probably not Steampunk enough.
