What is Steampunk?

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction and fantasy that includes technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Some examples of this are: 1) clothing that may appear as if it is made of copper, brown leather or gears, 2) personal gadgets that are designed with exposed gears and mechanical parts, 3) houses and furniture that are of Victorian style (Victorian Era). Often, people want to show up at a steampunk event in costume but do not know where to start. This blog will help you by providing top 5 costumes to purchase and how to make DIY overlays to make your bought costume look steampunk.

Many of you who are new to Steampunk ask me where you should start when trying to create a costume, my response is always the same: put it to the test! What do I mean by this? I mean when creating your costume, ask yourself these questions… 1) Can I wear this everyday and not feel like I am in costume? 2) Does this piece look like it could be used for another purpose? 3) How many different ways can I wear this item? 4) How many different looks can I get out of this item? If you can’t answer yes to these questions, then your item may not be Steampunk enough. The best way to help determine if an item is Steampunk is to ask yourself how you would use the item if there were no electricity. If you cannot find a way that your item can be used without electricity, then it is probably not Steampunk enough.

If you have ever wanted to dress up as a steampunk but aren’t sure where to start, you are in the right place! Steampunk is an amazing genre that allows a person to fully explore their creativity. It is also a wonderful way to repurpose old items and make them new again.

I am going to give you some ideas on how to start your journey into this genre of costuming.

Before I do though, I want you to be aware that steampunk has no rules. It is something that has evolved over time and continues to evolve today. You may see some costumes that are very Victorian in nature, others that are more futuristic and some with a touch of fantasy or whimsy. Steampunk is all about creating a world from your imagination and sharing it with others.

So, let’s put it to the test!

Are you ready?

When you think of Steampunk, do you imagine the Victorian Era? Do you think of airships and dirigibles? Do you see corsets and top hats? Do you hear the whir of gears and levers? Do you smell the scent of oil in the air? Do you taste the electrical currents in your mouth?
