Halloween Costume Ideas for the Whole Family: A blog about fun family halloween costumes.
Halloween is one of our favorite holidays here at Mad Hatter Costume and Magic Shop. We love to see all the creativity that goes into the costumes people wear. We also love to see all the creativity that goes into making costumes for families and groups. One of our favorite things to do is help families find or make the perfect family costume. Here are some of our favorites from this year.
First we have a group that came in and decided they wanted to be characters from Alice in Wonderland, but not just any characters, characters from Tim Burton’s movie version of Alice in Wonderland! The queen of hearts was a fabulous costume which show cases the creativity involved with these characters. That fabulous red dress was made by hand!
Next we have a group that chose to be characters from a movie not set in wonderland, The Wizard of Oz. They wanted Dorothy, a scarecrow, tin man and lion but did not want store bought costumes. These were made by hand as well! It took several fittings with each member of the group to get them just right!
We also had a young family come in looking for an interesting family costume idea. They ended up choosing

We love this idea for brothers and sisters! Alice would be adorable with a puffy blue dress, white tights and Mary Jane shoes. The rabbit can be created with a fluffy gray onesie like this one that has an attached hood, plus white gloves and a carrot nose.
Mad Hatter Costume
The Mad Hatter costume is a lot of fun for the whole family, and a great excuse to make silly costumes! There are many ways to make this costume. Here are a few suggestions:
Buy a Mad Hatter Costume
If you want to take the easy way out, it’s possible to find these costumes online at various places like Amazon.com or eBay. You can also find them at local costume shops around Halloween time. If you’re buying a costume, I recommend that you buy the one that comes with everything you need, including the wig and hat.
Mad Hatter Hat
A hatter’s hat was an essential part of dressing like a mad hatter. The most common type of hats were top hats, which were worn by both men and women in the early 19th century. The mad hatter character wore his hat askew on his head, which made him look even more crazy. This is what inspired Lewis Carroll when he created the character for Alice in Wonderland!
The Mad Hatter is a favorite character from Alice in Wonderland that makes for a very fun and colorful family costume. The trick is to make sure everyone in your family has their own take on the Mad Hatter. You don’t want everyone wearing the same outfit. You can have a little person as Alice, who is also mad, and a couple of cards or white rabbits to accompany them as they go trick-or-treating. This costume is great for all ages.
For this costume you are going to need some big hats, colorful clothing and lots of accessories like suspenders and bow ties. Get creative with all the different types of hats you can choose from. A cowboy hat, baseball cap, top hat or even a construction helmet could work! Add the different colored shirts, pants and suspenders that you already have in your closet and head off to Goodwill or any thrift shop for some more cheap options. The suspenders are going to be key for this costume as this is what connects each “Mad Hatter” look together.
The card guards and white rabbit costumes will be easy to pull off if you have these items on hand:
White Rabbit:
White t-shirts
White sweatpants
White gloves
Pink
Halloween is quickly approaching and if you’re like me your kids are already talking about their costumes. My kids love to dress up and my girls especially love to be in theme. So this year we will be doing a Mad Hatter costume for the girls, an Alice in Wonderland costume for my middle daughter and a Cheshire Cat costume for my youngest.
I’m sure there will be other costumes as well but this will be our theme for The Nightmare Before Christmas party that we have every year so these are the ones I’ve been focusing on. I plan on making all the costumes myself so I’ll be posting how-to’s in the future but for now, here is some inspiration for you all!
All of these costumes were found through Pinterest and all credit goes to the original poster!
What do you think of when you hear the term Mad Hatter? The phrase brings to mind a fun, crazy, tea party with the Mad Hatter and his friends. The Mad Hatter is a character from Lewis Carroll’s famous novel Alice in Wonderland.
So why is he called the mad hatter? In the 19th century, mercury was used in hat manufacturing. Workers were exposed to mercury fumes on a regular basis. The prolonged exposure to mercury caused neurological damage, leading to bizarre behavior such as slurred speech and irritability. This neurological damage was referred to as “mad as a hatter”.
Due to the potential health risks, mercury has been banned from hat making since December 31, 1941.
