The Mandalorian is a new Star Wars Netflix show. It’s set after the return of the Jedi, and before the rise of the First Order.

The Mandalorian takes place in a galaxy far, far away, after the fall of the Empire. A lone gunfighter makes his way through the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic.

It stars Pedro Pascal as Mando, a bounty hunter who wears an iconic Mandalorian helmet, and Cara Dune (Gina Carano), an ex-Rebel shock trooper who is now a mercenary for hire. The show is set in a time when “Jedi are hunted” and “the Force is weaker.”

Growing up in a small village on the outskirts of civilization, din Djarin was orphaned at a young age. Taken to the nearby city-planet of Corvus by his fellow tribe members, the young boy was given to the Mandalorians, who raised him as one of their own.

According to Mandalorian tradition, Djarin’s parents were promised to the Mandalorian cause through an exchange for their son’s protection and training. As part of his indoctrination, Djarin was fitted with beskar armor, a near-indestructible material that protects against blasters and lightsabers.

Djarin’s helmet was painted silver with a red T-shaped visor in keeping with the Death Watch tradition. One day, after he passed all his tests, he would paint over the silver and replace it with the traditional blue color of the original Mandalore.

A few years ago I was at a party talking to a friend of a friend—let’s call him Alex. Alex was smart, good-looking, and a successful entrepreneur. I liked him immediately. Then he said something that caught me off guard:

“I always have my eye out for the next girl I want to date, even when I’m on a date with someone.”

I must have made an involuntary noise of disapproval, because Alex looked at me and said, “What? Isn’t that how you are?” He had assumed that since I am single and he is single (and we were both at a dating-type event), I am also out there looking for the next best thing.

Alex and I never went out again, but his comment stuck in my head. How common is this way of thinking about dating? Is wanting to be ready to move on to the next person the norm? Or at least common enough to be considered normal?

Alex probably assumed that what he said would come across as harmless bragging—the kind of thing people do all the time on dates, or anywhere else they are trying to impress each other. In reality, Alex was making a subtle but clear statement
